We recently connected with BRILEX and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, BRILEX thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I’ve been a writer for as long as I can remember! Ever since I was a child I just felt like my thoughts were more cohesive on paper. But, it wasn’t until much later that I started to take my craft more seriously. Soon I would learn that to be a great writer you must first be a good reader.
Now, I understand that both of those skills require continuous practice and patience.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
As a writer, musician, and creative entrepreneur, I have had so many incredible opportunities to work with various mediums in order to create impactful narratives (from brand storytelling, songwriting, nonfiction essays, and screenplays).
I think what sets me apart from others in my industry is my dedication to authentic storytelling. I started seeking out ways to form genuine connections with others through language after realizing that so much of the content we consume daily is curated and artificial.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the community that forms. Expressing yourself transparently can feel very intimidating, but learning that your authenticity resonated with someone else is worth more than I can express!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
While working on my MFA I had a major setback. My ideas weren’t flowing the way I needed them to, and ultimately it delayed my thesis defense and the option for future publications. I was devastated and even considered taking a season away from writing entirely. But in that moment of disappointment and rejection, someone very close to me simply said, “quitting won’t get you there any faster”
I learned an important lesson… resilience can be uncomfortable, but regret is excruciating.
