We recently connected with Brittany Hart and have shared our conversation below.
Brittany, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
I was laid off from my job for two months due to missing a mandatory training. While at home, unpaid and trying to keep busy, I decided to bake a birthday cake for a friend. That strawberry shortcake received so much hype that i then took to Twitter and said, “I’m about to start taking orders”. Shortly afterwards, I received several orders for cakes, pies and cobblers weekly. Using family recipes from my grandmother who was a baker, I was averaging about three to four orders a week. Orders picked up so much that my best friend encouraged me to start a baking business and she named it HARTful Treats. It was perfect with my last name being HART so I ran with it, created a logo and made business cards.
Let’s talk a moment to learn more about Brittany. Brittany, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hailing from a small town in Savannah, Tennessee, Brittany Hart never had dreams of being a baker. After graduating with a Psychology degree from the University of Memphis and beginning a career in child and family counseling, Brittany decided it was time to turn up the hustle. With her grandmother’s recipes in her back pocket, Brittany honed her baking and self-taught cake decorating skills and birthed her business known as HARTful Treats. Twelve years later, a full-time single mother, community advocate amongst many other things, Brittany was able to turn baking from a hustle to a creative outlet. Baking allows Brittany creative expression for her God-given talent and the ability to serve others straight from her HART. HARTful Treats has the pleasure of putting smiles on faces and wowing tastebuds with amazing flavors. Specializing in custom cakes, cupcakes and other sweet treats for weddings, birthdays, and other special events.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Consistently exceeding their expectations which then encourages them to promote my business for me. Majority of my clientele is from word of mouth or someone who attend an event and had my cake. A good cake brings good conversation that will leave them wanting more. My social media has not been consistent as most but word of mouth through experiencing HARTful Treats is what has kept my business alive.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Being “booked and busy” isn’t healthy for a creative such as myself. The overload of orders will take a wear and tear on your body which will lead to burnout. I take on what I know my body will allow me to and schedule time in between to recuperate so that I am able to give my best self to my next order.
