We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brittany Harding. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brittany below.
Hi Brittany, thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Britt’s Kitchen was actually my hobby Instagram page named by my cousin back when I was in college. I’ve always loved cooking, and baking with my mom since I was a young age, and she taught me almost everything I know in the kitchen. When I would try new recipes I would invite my cousin over to try everything, so she called it Britt’s Kitchen. In 2020 during the pandemic is when I really decided I wanted to make a business out of it. Since so many people were isolated to their homes everyone was loving the DIY trends. My very first item I sold was my DIY Cookie kits that came with everything needed to decorate your own cookies. From there I got request for different treats, and even food! My husband and his family is from Trinidad and his mother would sell Caribbean food back home and we would always help her cook and make orders when she had her events. Eventually we decided to do the same thing in Tennessee and our city fell in love with our food and baked goods! What made us unique and stand out was the fusion of authentic Caribbean flavors with American soul food that I grew up with.
Brittany, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Brittany Harding and I am a wife, a mother and a small business owner. We are a family owned business and we serve homemade baked goods and Caribbean food. I have my degree in business management and I also work full time in the HR industry. I started baking as a side hustle to help pay for family trips and extracurricular activities and it has grown bigger than I could imagine! I love creating new and sometimes even custom treats and seeing the look on clients face when they receive their order and how much they love it!
My husband , Keron Harding, was born and raised in Trinidad and has been an essential part of my support team, as well as the grill master behind the jerk chicken! His father taught him all the basics of grilling and how to make the jerk chicken and he evolved it into his own unique style.
We try to create a unique menu of items to make ourselves stand out from others, so once our customers try us for the first time they will definitely be back!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
As I mentioned before, my instagram started as a hobby page and when I started the business, I decided to use it as my page for my business since I wanted to keep it separate from my personal page. I realized how important a social media presence is for small businesses so I did a lot of research. I followed content creators and bakers for tips on how to take pictures and make eye catching content for my clientele. Once I had this down I started creating scheduled post so that my page stays active even when I am busy or spending time with family. I joined local groups and started sharing my content so that I can reach more people outside of friends and family as well. It really does pay off in the end because most of my clients find me on social media! My biggest tip for a beginner would be to never stop self promoting! If you are not sharing your business, how will people know about you!?
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
The best thing to build your reputation is word of mouth and great reviews! Once I started getting people to try my baked goods and food it was easy to get new clients. I get tagged on social media all the time as a referral in post for people looking for custom treats or for dinners. I always ask my clients to leave reviews which allows me to make improvements when needed and also share with others who have not yet tried our food different peoples experiences and opinions.
