Brittany, appreciate you joining us today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
Being a business owner has its many ups and downs. Sometimes going back to work a full-time job for someone else could make life much simpler.
I don’t know about you, but do you ever wake up, drink your morning coffee, and just think, “What am I doing? Why am I doing this?” – I do too.
Honestly, the thought of going back to work full time for someone else, crosses my mind at least every week or so.
I like to wake before my kids and enjoy my hour of silence while drinking my morning coffee, but within that hour (especially on weeks I don’t make many sales) I overthink about how I’m going to grow my business, how am I going to keep up with my competitors, how do I stand out, is my business worth continuing? How this…How that…blah…blah…blah…
I can’t be the only one who does this, right?
As I wallow in self-pity, sipping my coffee I realize that every business starts somewhere. It begins where nobody is looking and eventually, big things happen. Your business is seen, and shared, and loved. It takes hard work and mornings or days as above to dig deep and learn better ways to grow.
Sometimes these negative thoughts or simple ideas can feed the imagination into growing into a more positive direction.
I’ve taken many of these tough mornings and have come up with some great ideas to grow my business, learn trends that are in my business circle, and have researched books and programs to improve all aspects of my business.
Now, would life be easier working for someone else? Yes.
But would life be better?
Absolutely not.
Being an entrepreneur is REALLY hard work, but the freedom of being able to control the times I work, when I work, and how I do my work is well worth it.
I enjoy being able to make it to see my kid’s school performances, family holiday get-togethers, and being able to enjoy hobbies and life in general (which is one of the reasons we work, right? To be able to afford the fun things and hobbies in life).
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Brittany. I am a mom, wife, nurse, nutrition coach, Crossfit Coach and gym owner. I’m constantly busy and running around from here to there.
I live in activewear, whether I’m working out, coaching, chasing kids, or wearing them under my scrubs.
In my busy life, I love to stay comfortable in all of the activities I’m doing.
But that comfort came with a price for the quality activewear I needed for all the activities I do each day. I found that I was spending most of my paychecks on one single pair of leggings or sports bra, which sounds outrageous.
I decided in early 2022 that I was going to create a mom-based high-quality activewear brand that wouldn’t cost the crazy prices of the more known brands.
This brand would be named Hayler Apparel, activewear for the active mama doing it all.
As a mom, I knew some of the important details we mama’s need in activewear. We need pockets to store necessities, comfort, high-waist, and durability. We need something that will last, especially going from the gym, to picking up kids, heading to soccer practices, and running errands.
We need to feel beautiful and strong, because, Dammit- We are!
I’m proud to be able to go on this amazing journey of being a mom (even animal mama’s- I see you!) with all of you and showing off the amazing things each of you do.
I love to share the hikes, accomplishments, and workouts you all share and tag Hayler Apparel in on social media.
Excitement is an understatement to see you all wearing Hayler!
I hope in the future, the activewear of Hayler will grow to also be in support of active Kiddo’s and Dad’s doing it all as well!
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I love to read/listen to business and self-help books. I find them fascinating, and I try to absorb all I can from each book I read. I have found if you do not practice what you listen to or learn in these books, you will not improve. Just listening/reading doesn’t make much of a difference, you have to practice what you read over and over again.
A few books that have made a big difference in my life, but there are many more aside from these:
1) The Courage to be Disliked, Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga: This is a philosophical style book. It shows you how things in your past do not make up your future. Learning from situations-good or bad- and deciding where to go from there is your decision and some of those decisions may not make everyone happy-and that is okay.
Take this book to grow into the future, rather than live in the past and never move forward. Building a business is forward moving and it needs you to keep growing.
2) The Diary of a CEO, Steven Barlett. This book will walk you through several Laws to help you build and grow a business. I highly recommend this book. Learn to become a leader and the many steps to becoming a great entrepreneur.
3) Obviously Awesome, April DunFord. This book is about learning to position your product. You may have the greatest product on the planet, but without correct positioning, it is just a product. This book will walk you through how to position your product/service to get optimal sales.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing Hayler’s clientele would be just to be my weird self on social media.
I’ve tried the dancing Tik-Tok trends, the B-roll trends, the whatever is “cool” now trend, and I have found that the more myself I am, the more likes/follows/shares I get.
I am no marketer and half the time I’m winging my Instagram posts and reels, but the ones that feel most authentic and less forced are the ones that make me laugh while I’m putting them together.
My bloopers are where I get the most engagement and the silly lip-sync reels are my jam. I enjoy just being weird and hoping people laugh when they see posts roll by.
Now, I’m not saying I don’t do serious reels or posts, but the one’s that make people laugh seem to be the biggest help in growing clientele and getting engagement.
For social media, it is a great idea to check your “insights” after you have posted, that way you can see if your post has reached non-followers as well as your followers. Depending on your goal of the post. If you are looking to make sells, your followers are likely where you want your post to go, if you are looking for engagement/new potential clients/your product seen, non-followers are the goal.
