We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brittany Goodwin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Brittany , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I knew at a very young age that I was creative. I use to make crafts all the time and paint as a child. As I aged, writing became a form of healing and self-expression for me. I knew in some capacity I always wanted to pursue a creative life. After college I started to dive more into social media and started creating content online. I tried a bunch of different things like fashion, beauty, and vlogging while I was growing as a content creator. Now, I create content geared towards things I’m passionate about like beauty, wellness, and travel. I realized over the years that creativity has always been apart of my life and I’m letting my craft bloom where I am.
Brittany , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into social media content creation by watching the growth of YouTubers in 2010. Impactful Influencers like Jackie Aina and Jenn Im were always a big inspiration to me on how they grew their platforms by being their authentic selves. I felt drawn to content creation because it quite literally impacted industries all over the world. Industries like fashion and beauty were notoriously very difficult to break into and content creators shattered the glass ceiling. There is still work to do as I’m very passionate about diversity and inclusion in the space and want to see more Black women grow their platforms and land opportunities. I’m so proud of how far I have come as a creative and it’s very important to me to keep creating fun work and inspire my community to be their authentic selves. In a lot of ways being creative is the best way I know how to express myself and before it became my career I was that little girl writing poetry in her notebook.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had the unlearn the massive effects of imposter syndrome in my life. I grew up pretty shy and not very confident in being seen in a large way. As I started to grow my platforms as I content creator I realized that I have to do my best to learn how to feel more confident in myself if I wanted to continue to make content. The journey has not been easy and I still go to therapy to help with impeding thoughts. I also think this is a very human and natural struggle creatives feel. It takes time but eventually I began to feel more confident about my work and less afraid to put myself out there. My audience is super supportive of me as well which always helps because it’s my friends and family cheering me on.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is seeing your visions come to life. I daydreamed a lot about what I wanted my life to be before I started content creation and to this day I still surprise myself that things I wanted to manifest came true. It’s also rewarding to land opportunities to help grow your platforms and collaborate with great brands. I landed an amazing partnership with a hotel this year and it really set the tone for my manifestations moving forward. I can attract and make cool things happen by putting positive intentions out into the world and create from the heart. I think when you create from the heart good things always follow.
