We recently connected with Brittany Gonzalez and have shared our conversation below.
Brittany, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear how you think where to draw the line in terms of asking friends and family to support your business – what’s okay and what’s over the line?
I am blessed to have friends and family who have supported me since I first started my business. Modern Mom on the Move started out as a blog and a way for me to vent about my kids being 10 years apart and how everything was so different. From there it grew into an annual conference to bring together all my subscribers and then to selling merchandise and now an annual international retreat for moms. I find it difficult to ask my friends and family for sponsorship money for the annual retreat. I know that those who attend are already spending a lot of money to attend, so I try to look for sponsorship dollars outside of my friends and family. Initially, The first year I ended up losing money because I was afraid to charge a retreat fee for the swag bags, and a friend of mine reminded me that this is a business and the service I offer is valuable. She told me to never forget my worth and the impact that my company has on so many moms and mompreneurs. That was an inspirational and pivotal for me and my business.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Brittany Gonzalez and I am the creator of Modern Mom on the Move. Modern Mom on the Move (MMOTM) started as a personal blog following the birth of my daughter. At the time, my son was already ten years old, I was managing a full-time career, social life, a spoiled Chihuahua and being married to a Gemini man.
It felt like I was starting all over again with the introduction of our baby girl.
I was looking for a community of like-minded, like-situated moms/women to share the story of my new walk in life. Through consistent blogging, I found a virtual community of support for my new normal of life.
One day I decided to bring my virtual community together in real life for an in-person event. By the end of the event, the audience labeled it the “first annual” conference and we have been growing in numbers and impact ever since.
Today, Modern Mom on the Move serves as a community resource for event curation. We specialize in connecting busy mothers with resources and outlets to navigate the controlled chaos we lovingly refer to as motherhood.
Our community consists of moms and women in general who serve in a maternal capacity – expectant moms, grandmothers, aunts, mentors, older sisters, fur mamas, etc.
Every summer Modern Mom on the Move hosts its annual retreat to a different international destination. This will be our 4th year and we will be going away for 6 days to an all-inclusive resort in Curacao.
Throughout the year, we host a variety of events including meet-ups, kid friendly events, mom workshops, virtual events and sale our merchandise online or at local vendor events.
I am proud of the growth of my company and my brand and that people truly trust me to curate transformational events for both them and their children. My “baby” is now 11 and my son is 21 with his own beautiful baby girl. Everything has truly come full circle and I know it would not have been possible without this amazing network that I created over a decade ago.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I have two stories of resilience. The first would be surviving and thriving during the pandemic. While a lot of businesses shut down, I used the opportunity to feel a void for so many of us mothers who were stuck in the house and overwhelmed. I planned virtual game nights and even a virtual mixology class for us to let loose and unwind. I continued with my then annual conference to continue to bring awareness to my fellow mompreneurs and give them more exposure to their products and services. It ended up being therapeutic for us all and as a result my followers and customer base grew significantly during that time.
My second story would be when my son graduated high school and moved out. It was a huge blow to both me and my husband. We knew he wasn’t ready but we also knew we had to trust that the skills and values we instilled in him over the years would be his guiding light. During that time, I became very depressed and did not have the bandwidth to curate and pour into my tribe of MMOTMs like I had in previous years with the annual conference. That was the year that I decided that we needed to get away and I planned my first ever retreat to Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. The retreat was a huge success and although I wasn’t able to highlight all of the speakers and vendors like I had done in the past with the conference, it was the restart that the company and I needed for that next chapter of my life. Needless to say, we never went back to the conference, and we will have our fourth retreat in August of this year.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source if new clients for me are vending events. When I go out into the community and sale my products and explain the value of the network, I always walk away with five or more new clients. Most of my engagement is done via Instagram, so it’s nice to meet them one weekend and in a few weeks, they are tagging me in a post or inviting me to future events. It’s such a organic and rewarding experience every time. People buy from companies that they know and trust and by doing the events, it gives new clients the opportunity to meet me in person and began building that trust.
