We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brittany Garrett. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brittany below.
Alright, Brittany thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
Overall being a makeup artist is a risky job, we don’t have job security most times because makeup is still an unappreciated art for most. We often times are only celebrated in the movie and entertainment spaces. I remember when I decided to become a makeup artist a few people asked what I would do for money during the week. Not to mention until this day I get asked “if this is the only thing I do or do I have another job”. My husband and I are both entrepreneurs so running a household having our own businesses is undoubtedly a risk. We chose to do this due to having 3 boys, we wanted to be as involved in their lives as we could be. My husband has coached teams our kids have been on, we love vacationing and personally I love being there for them when they need me most. Anytime they’re sick or something important at school is happening mommy is there.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got into my line of work accidentally, from a young girl I always loved makeup but didn’t always have the most access to it. I wanted to venture into studying cosmetology but my mom wanted me to complete college first. After college I got a job in corporate America, my husband and I already had our first son so it was imperative that we started working right away. I worked for a car insurance company for 5 years before switching to a position at a for profit college in my area. After working 6 weeks the college got in a little trouble and dismantled my department; forcing layoffs. I was devastated due to losing that income but overjoyed to be out of such an unstable situation. After months of filling out applications with not so much as a rejection email I discussed with my husband taking time off for us to expand our family and for me to stay home to take care of the kids. We agreed it was best since day care can be expensive when you have multiple kids. While I was at home with our children I started to strengthen my skills doing my own makeup and decided to start a beauty channel on YouTube. After a couple of months friends of mine started to ask for me to do their makeup for special events. I started to build my kit and in 2019 I received my makeup certification from the state of Ohio. From there I’ve worked every year to grow and continue to build my clientele.

Have you ever had to pivot?
Pivoting in business is second nature, it happens and sometimes frequently. We all had to pivot when the pandemic hit. Once the lockdown occurred the beauty industry in particular had to shut down. Of course my clients are unable to wear masks. Even to this day I do wear a mask to protect my clients as well as myself. We were instructed to close down for 6 weeks with no idea if we are opening back and what that will look like. In the mist of that I decided to explore starting my own cosmetics line. It’s something I could do with having to interact with clients but still supply them with assistance with their glam! With everyone wearing masks I did not want to do any lipstick products or foundations so I looked at what I was known for….BLUSH. With the name Blushing Brit I knew it would make sense to have a Blush product. The Blushing Brit Blighter Kit was born. A combination blush and highlighter palette with names that represent things from my life.
