We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brittany Garner a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Brittany, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
Under my brand Lead Creatively Digital, one of our primary focuses when working with our web design clients is a strong emphasis on website education and ongoing website support.
After every design project, we teach our clients how to use their websites so that they are able to confidently handle tasks like blogging, updating products, theme + plugin updates, and making small content changes to their site’s pages.
Along with this, we offer monthly website support built to maintain and keep websites of all types updated and ready to take on the online world.
Your brand’s goals will change so that means your website should evolve with it. We keep websites happy and healthy as you focus on growing your business. Plus, we’re always around when you need help with adding a new feature to your site or if you’re in need of any advice for it.
Brittany, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Growing up, I was always into tech and web design. Back in the good ol’ days of the internet (ugh, remember AOL???) you could find me glued to my computer tinkering and tweaking Myspace and Livejournal pages for myself and my online friends. Later on down the line, I ran into a tool called WordPress and fell in love. I’m all about creating websites that are powerful and scale as your business grows and WordPress provides both of those capabilities from start to finish.
Of course, WordPress wasn’t what it is today when it was first introduced to the bloggers, devs, and designers of the world but I always knew that it had some serious potential… so I stuck with it.
Fast forward to 2018. I had been creating and helping friends, family, and colleagues (for FREE) with their WordPress-based websites and decided to take it a little further. I felt quirky and used my username (britahknees) and started a business BRITAHKNESS Web Design and Development.
At the start of 2022, we rebranded to Lead Creatively Digital, an agency that provides custom-built web design and ongoing website support services to leadership coaches, personal brands, racial equity strategists, and other awesome creative leaders. We now build sites on other major platforms like Squarespace, Shopify, and Wix.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
There are three major sources that help me to connect with potential clients; word-of-mouth referrals, Google search, and Instagram.
By the way, for Google search, if you don’t have your Google My Business page set up or optimized, you may be missing out on leads for your business. Google My Business is a great (and FREE!) way to enhance your business’s Google listing in local searches. I can’t count the many times that I’ve run into business owners who haven’t taken advantage of this important tool.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
Yes, this was indeed the case for me! Before going full-time in my business, I was a coach and general manager at a local CrossFit gym. On the days that I didn’t coach, I went all in on building my business. After designing and launching a number of websites for friends and colleagues, I realized how important this work was and how much I loved doing it. Then as soon as COVID became a thing, my business blew up. I got so many referrals and online leads that I had no choice but to go full-time in my business. I still consider this to be the biggest key milestone for Lead Creatively Digital; I’m so blessed to be able to get up every day to do the work that I love.
