We recently connected with Brittany Fugate and have shared our conversation below.
Brittany, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
When I started Cenetric, I was trying to solve a problem – creating jobs. My friends were all impacted by the 2008 tech layoffs and as I watched them struggle, many of them with kids, I felt compelled to do something to help. That was when the idea of Cenetric was born. I thought I could use my technical talents to help businesses and in the process, create jobs for the friends that were struggling. I didn’t think about what it meant to be a CEO or what it would be like to run an IT company in the future. The deep vision for the company really developed as we began to hear the stories of how our clients had started their companies and the customers they were serving. Learning how important our role was in their success brought clarity on how to shape the company along the way.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I have always loved technology and been drawn to understanding it. The logic behind technology has always made sense to me, so it was really a natural fit for me. I wanted to understand how everything worked and pursued a deeper understanding. I’ve also always cared deeply about people and wanting to make the world a better place. Since the early days of Cenetric, my vision is to use our technical talents to help businesses achieve their goals, in line with their mission.
Our partnerships and ongoing relationships with our customers is what sets us apart. They’ve grown with us and we’ve grown with them. We understand and support them by learning their staff by name, knowing how they use technology to support their business and finding ways to improve upon what they are doing or evaluating cost-saving measures for them.
I’m really proud of the level of care and concern that the Cenetric team has for our clients. We understand and respect the immense trust that businesses are putting in us to keep them safe and protect them from a growing landscape of threats. The team really cares about the success of our clients and puts their all into everything we do.

Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
In the early days of Cenetric, I had no idea how to get new clients. I was trying everything that they said to try – email marketing, phone calls, networking events, but nothing was working and I was becoming increasingly more worried and desperate to find new clients. I knew Cenetric was going to be a short-lived idea unless I could find revenue.
One day while out looking around at the Harry and David store, I saw some gourmet maltball candy on clearance. I had a crazy idea, so I bought all of them. I took those maltballs and a spiral-bound book of our services and went door-to-door with them. I drove everywhere from Topeka to Kansas City to Louisburg with those candies. I brought one box for the gatekeeper and one for the decision maker. I did my research on the company before I went and asked for individuals by name. It took visiting a lot of businesses, but we got our first few clients that way.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Aside from the door-to-door campaign, we’ve not been very successful with marketing. We stopped putting much effort in marketing years ago and really focused on servicing our clients well and asking for referrals. That’s been our most successful growth strategy by far. Our clients continue to grow locations, refer new businesses and spread good reviews about us. This single strategy has proven tremendously good for growth and for client and team satisfaction.
