We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brittany Ellis . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brittany below.
Brittany, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I learned my art style through trial and error. I feel the hardest thing about being an artist is finding your place within the genre. Attending art school sped up my creative process and allowed me to learn the fundamentals of creating that I didn’t know before. I was always a creative person, but I lacked the technical accuracy in proportion, perspective, and color theory. When I was in college, I began to experiment with my artistic style to separate myself as a creative against my peers. I needed to discover my own way of creating, especially in an environment where talent was immense to stand out as an artist. After acquiring the traditional skills artists are taught, I began to experiment with combining mediums, objects, and different painted surfaces. The only obstacles I encountered with experimenting were the failures that come with learning about different mediums. For example, painting acrylic paint on top of canvas isn’t a formula for a long-lasting painting because the acrylic doesn’t adhere to the wax and the wax doesn’t adhere to the canvas. Overtime, the wax will flake off of the painting. If I didn’t experiment with both mediums, I wouldn’t have discovered this issue.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a celestial texture artist, YouTuber, and sales specialist living in Houston, Texas. Nine times out of ten I am asked one number one question! WHY SPACE STUFF? I was an avid daydreamer as a child and space became my escape from reality when I was enduring a difficult experience. Everyone possesses an explorer spirit when it comes to the unknown. My artwork intrigues viewers through this curiosity. The wondrous explorer spirit connects us all whether we’ve been to space or not. Outside my personal artistic pursuits, I am also a founding member of the Houston artist group named T.E.N. We work in various niches ranging from painting, tapestries, and mixed media art. Our mission is to challenge the social norms of the art world by choosing to be artists who support artists. Within the art world, artists are coaxed into participating in the pay for play scheme with little to no show for their efforts. Our goal is to support artists by bringing awareness to their work through promotion.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was how to ignore the core principles artists are taught in school. For example, if I am painting an image from one of my art references, automatically I try to recreate the image perfectly. Honestly, when a viewer looks at a painting they don’t know if the tree bends to the left or to the right initially in a composition. The only thing a viewer can depict is if it looks accurate. As artists, we try to make things perfect because school teaches us to be that way. I had to learn how to ignore aspects of painting that aren’t as important, such as copying a reference photo to a tee.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is being able to have a creative outlet that allows me to escape from the stress of life. When I create, I feel as if I’m transported to another realm and when the painting is created, I feel an accomplishment similar to when you make a purchase you always wanted.
