We were lucky to catch up with Brittany Dickinson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Brittany, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Persistence! I had just moved to Chicago where I had zero network… I heard about a position that would have me working side by side with 15 very experienced older dentists and knew it would be the perfect place for me to hone my skills. I applied for that position three times before I got it! The company wanted someone who had experience with a CEREC technology… I said give me one weekend to learn it and I’ll be your go-to person for same-day crowns. I think it was this confidence in my abilities (as well as my follow through) that ultimately won me the position. At the time, my main goal was to become a great dentist. I knew that working with such experienced doctors would be an incredible opportunity and it absolutely was. I stayed in that position for seven years! The men that mentored me over those years introduced me to their own niches in dentistry, shaped my strong moral base as a practitioner, and showed me what it meant to be a part of a community. Looking back, it was exactly where I was supposed to be at the time, and I am so happy that I was able to begin my career there.
Brittany, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have always had an interest in beauty and art, as well as a desire to make a difference in people’s lives. When I found dentistry, it was as if everything fell into place. I love that I can totally transform a person’s smile in a matter of weeks. Throughout the years, I found that upgrading a smile has a huge effect on the face, and sometimes needs the help of botox and fillers to put the finishing touches together. When I describe what I do, I call it micro-optimisation of the lower face. I analyse my guest’s face for asymmetries from the outside in, starting with the eyes and jawline- all the way in to the smile. When I discuss treatment options, I look at the minimal treatment needed to preserve natural beauty and uniqueness while balancing out asymmetries. Each person is like a work of art to me, there is no one-size-fits=all treatment. Each and every transformation I do keeps little details that make their smile and face unique for a totally bespoke result. I have an array of tools in my belt to bring together a transformation. From teeth whitening, Invisalign, porcelain veneers, botox, fillers, and sculptra, I utilize a combination of treatments to give my guests a level of confidence they’ve been dreaming of for years!
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Beyond education and training, knowing your why is incredibly valuable for succeeding in my field. The mechanics of any medical profession can become routine after a number of years. For me, the why is the people in my community. While the aesthetics of what I do is incredibly fun and seeing a wonderful before and after photo is rewarding, my why goes beyond that. I get to know my guests on a personal level, we talk about their families, their jobs, their vacations, their struggles. I feel so connected to them, that I am as excited as they are for the transformation they’re about to experience. Reveal day is emotional for them as well as myself because I know how much this will make a difference in their lives.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my business is to be comfortable with who I am and showcase that. I am a girly-girl who loves wearing dresses and heels to work every day AND I am a talented, compassionate cosmetic dentist and injector. Once I embraced being a woman in a traditionally male-dominated field, I realized it doesn’t hold me back at all, it makes me better! Being true to who I am has brought people to my business that vibe with me on such a personal level, that we also have great professional relationships.
