We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brittany Crane a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Brittany , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
10 years ago I suffered from extreme post-partum depression. Getting out in nature was key to my healing. Once I discovered how nature impacted me I started getting outside regularly and inviting friends to come along. I saw how healing nature was for all women and I started a women’s outdoor company called Get Out There Girl. I host monthly free events and quarterly adventure retreats. With all of my outdoor travels and adventures over the years I have seen how inadequate women’s outdoor clothing is. I made a goal to solve that inadequacy and last year I launched my new clothing company Olli.
The mission of Olli lies in our name. One Life Live It. We believe in living life to the fullest and creating a life where you look forward to each new day. Our goal is to get women outdoors where they can be inspired. We challenged ourselves to solve the outdoor clothing problem women face. We created clothing that is both functional and fashionable for the outdoors. With Olli, women are no longer stuck choosing between flattering yoga pants that are fragile and tear or bulky cargo pants that are tough but far from fashionable. Olli clothing is tough, comfortable, functional and fashionable. We have flattering angles, zipper pockets, and material that you will never want to take off. We are proud of our clothing and proud of our mission to get women outdoors dressed in clothes that are as tough and beautiful as they are.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Brittany Crane and I often tell people my two favorite places are the mountains and the mall. I love hiking and I love shopping. I have dreamed of creating hiking clothing for women for years. I’ve seen how many women hike in yoga pants and how often those pants tear or snag. Yoga pants were meant for a yoga mat not bushes and rocks and mountains. Because of my love of style and clothing I wanted clothes that were tough enough to handle whatever I threw at them but also looked flattering. I wanted clothes that I could wear canyoneering and hiking but also to the grocery store, traveling and even lounging around the house. I spent years thinking through what the perfect pair of pants and shorts would look like. Last year I was able to create them! It took an entire year to get the fabric right, the sizing inclusive, and the design perfected. Not to mention the logo created and marketing started. With 5 kids and a household to take care of it was a lot of late nights and early mornings. Some disappointment here are there with how long things take mixed with pure excitement seeing my designs come to life.
At Olli, we currently have 5 products. Two styles of tank tops, one style of t-shirt, a pair of joggers, and a pair of shorts that landed at the perfect length.
Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
Olli launched in September of 2023. As a team we discussed selling clothes at Pinners Conference in October of the same year. We were too late to get a booth at the Utah conference so we signed up for a booth in Arizona. I went to work getting everything ready for Arizona. The night before the Utah conference at 10 pm in the evening my Pinners contact called me and told me there was a booth available in the morning if I wanted it. Someone backed out and because I was local and could do last minute she called me. I said yes immediately and then hung up the phone and had a mini panic attack. It was after 10pm and I had to have a full booth set up ready to sell clothes by 8 am. I made a few calls to arrange child care, booth help, decor, and inventory. I was so grateful for all of the friends and family who came to my rescue and helped. I went to bed late that night and woke up very early. I stuffed my suburban with as much decor from my own house as I could and ran to the warehouse where my Olli clothes are stored. I showed up at the convention center, unpacked and set up. We immediately started making sales. The clothes sold like hot cakes! Women were in love with the bamboo fabric and the joggers. It was an exhausting and exciting two days. I even ended up losing my voice from talking so much. I learned so much about business in those two days. It felt like a crash course in business and I got to do it again the very next weekend in Arizona.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I’m still building my resilience and am navigating this experience in my journey. Olli clothes sell like hot cakes in person. Once a women sees and feels the fabric she falls in love and purchases. Often the decision that takes the most time is deciding which color she wants. I love watching women fall in love with the clothes I designed. It’s surreal. However, online its a different story. I’m trying to figure out the online marketing that gets women to click and purchase.
