We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brittany Clayborne. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brittany below.
Brittany, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
At the age of 26 years old I had a heart attack during labor and was diagnosed was Peripartum Cardiomyopathy. After dying and being shocked back on multiple occasions received a type of mechanical heart (LVAD) and finally 8 years after my initial diagnosis, a heart transplant.
While recovering from my heart transplant I realized how fractured I was mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. Because of this I began to seek out a mental health professional that would be able to help me deal with the trauma of my critical illness in all three phases of my life.
Upon not being able to find one I wondered how many others were seeking restoration after or during critical illness therefore I began my doctoral journey to become a critical illness psychosynthetic psychologist.
I am very purposeful about focusing on all three aspects of the human experience mental, emotional and spiritual and helping to restore synchronicity to each individual that I work with.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a mother, heart transplant recipient, stage 4 cancer survivor, author, speaker, and psychologist.
I founded Brittany Speaks in 2015 (Formerly Heart Unfailure) to advocate for organ donation and bring education and awareness to our communities but as I spent more time within my own illness and also around others that were experiencing something similar my passions evolved.
My passion is to help restore synchronicity of the mental, emotional, and spiritual facets of each client’s life but helping them to overcome, release, and evolve into the most authentic version of themselves.
I offer a 111 day program that helps to achieve this outcome, which is customized to each individual.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
I think the most helpful knowledge for succeeding my field is a sense of who you are as a person. When you choose to open up a business the people that rally around you are trusting you to be steadfast and keep the ship steady and when that doesn’t happen it can not only affect your business but also you potential outlook going forward for partnerships, collaborations, etc.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
The most resilient thing that I can think of is getting my Master’s degree. I was told that I was dying and I had to stay in the hospital until I received a heart. I was confined to one room in cardiac ICU for 9 months and in that time I started and finished my Master’s Degree.
Same with my doctorate, I stated it the same time I started chemo and working toward helping others helped me to forge through really dark times.
There were so many moments that it seemed silly and like a waste of time but I truly believe that having something to work toward saved my life.
