Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brittany Carel. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Brittany, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So, let’s start with trends – what are some of the largest or more impactful trends you are seeing in the industry?
The biggest trend I would say in my industry Fashion, modeling, TV and film making is the inclusivity of women.
10 years ago it was very rare to see a model under 59, a curve model, or someone other than whites on the cover of an ad.
This industry has been taking strides for decades to fight for true inclusivity. Although it feels like it’s happening overnight.
You now see more curve women and shorter women portrayed in the media now than ever before.
Brittany, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Brittany Carel and I am a model and actress.
My parents were commercial models so growing up I always saw the profitability, and success that one can have in this industry. Not to mention all the perks of traveling.
That being said this industry may look like roses, diamonds, and money signs when in reality it is one of the hardest industries to break into or even be successful in.
I am Model as a child and then put it away until college when my best friend was interning for designer and needed a model. I decided to give it a shot I thought to myself it’s in my blood if my parents did it so we can I. And that day I fell in love with it.
Growing up I was never really the prettiest I had braces, glasses, a horrible haircut, a low self-esteem and was surrounded by mean girls in school. So the way that modeling made me feel, confident, empowered, safe I just fell in love with it and wanted to do it for the rest of my life.
So as a girl with big dreams, but short in the old industry standards I was reaching for a pipe dream. Typically your model average height is 5’8 and up. As for myself standing at a solid 5 foot 6, foot seven if I really stand up straight I was already set up for failure. On top of that I was not your typical model size, I was curvier and athletic from playing sports my whole life. I was told off the bat that that was a no-no for modeling and that I would have to lose weight to look more like a standard model.
Which naturally led to eating disorders. After being unsuccessful in trying to lose the weight I asked my Eden if I could be moved to the plus size board where I was then told I was too small for plus size. OK so now you’re telling me I’m too big for straight size modeling but I’m too small for plus size modeling so what the heck am I supposed to do.
I thought to myself there’s no way in the only woman this height that’s feeling this way and that’s when I discovered that I am what they call in between size model. I guess just wrap this all up I represent a average healthy sized women in the media and I am very happy that the industry is finally taking strides in including women of all Heights shapes and colors I guess just wrap this all up I represent a average healthy sized women in the media and I am very happy that the industry is finally taking strides including women of all heights shapes and colors .
I think what sets me apart from others is just my authenticity, I never want to come off as just a model, I am more than a pretty face I’m intelligent I’m hard-working I’m self disciplined and I intend to leave a mark in this world. I’m here to break down the stigma that all models are stuck up in and mean, that’s not the case.
I love to work with brands that align with me personally, because then the clients gonna get a true genuine smile or glimmer in my eyes. You can’t fake true happiness. Natural beauty brands, athletic brands, health and wellness brands are all things that I really value to my core. Brands that support having a inclusive size chart at the top of my list.
I am living proof that as long as you keep working hard, staying consistent, and being patient your dreams will come true. I did not take no for an answer. Thousands of doors slammed in my face because I wasn’t tall enough to meet their outdated industry standards. Now I’m represented by one of the top agencies in Los Angeles. Represented all throughout the country both are modeling and acting.
I want women to look at me in a magazine and feel confident about their body. I’m not a 5 foot nine size 2 typical model. I’m shorter I’m curvy I’m athletic I am goofy as hell and I love what I do and you can see that in the camera.
I think a big key to my success is surrounding myself with people that are supportive of your dreams and also people that are striding towards their own goals.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
As a 5 foot six size 6 model trying to break into the industry, before this new wave of inclusivity, it was a longshot.
I’ve had dozens of doors slammed in my face casting directors and agencies because I was simply not tall enough and did not meet their 5 foot eight minimum height. Or my hips were too big.
I was told constantly to lose weight to start myself to do whatever it took to get down to a standard size which back then was a size 2. I went down a nasty rabbit hole both mentally and physically trying to attain these unrealistic body standards for myself and eventually I cracked
I decided that this was not healthy for the longevity of my life and career so decided that I was going to become a curve model. Simple right? Until the agency told me that I was too small to be a curved model. So then with a puzzled look on my face I said hold on I’m too big for straight size modeling but now I’m too small for curb modeling so what the heck am I supposed to do .. give up.? No that’s not me and more importantly there’s a really serious issue we have at this industry.
So I decided to just embrace the shape and size that I was born with . I am considered an in-between size model which means I’m not straight size but I’m not plus size I’m right in the middle just like 80% of the worlds population.
I had to pivot and just take a leap of faith and create a new box for myself in this industry.
And once I did I was working more than ever, I was happy, my body looked amazing because I was actually eating and taken care of it
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Someone told me once that you should always treat your job as if it’s your last.
I’m really big on professionalism, and just being kind to every single person I encounter and sad. My fiancé is a Director and together we have a production company so I understand how many people it takes to put on a production.
Some of these people are up for 14 hours busting their ass for a fraction of what other people crewmembers are making.
It really is a collaborative team effort in this industry and whether your talent, a Director, producer, lighting team, craft services, wardrobe, production assistant. Every single person on us that has a role and they need to be treated with respect.
When I show up and say I never have an ego, I’m always on time, I don’t complain, I am here for my service and I am going to deliver with 100% effort. I think that’s why I have such a good reputation in my home market with casting directors and agencies because I am reliable
