We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brittany Bygrave a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Brittany thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I started Butter’d with my own skin journey in mind. I’ve had acne, eczema, and hyperpigmentation as early as 14 years old. Dealing with how different my skin is, in multiple contexts, diminished my self-esteem. I used to hide behind makeup, clothing and more just to feel accepted.
I was on the market for years looking for a solution that wasn’t painful and high-quality. It wasn’t until I was exposed to the world of clean beauty that I understood the importance of skin health. After I fell in love with clean ingredients, I started creating products for myself and then slowly transformed into family/friends. I created Butter’d to transform the idea of good skin for people who look like me.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Butter’d is a feel-good beauty brand for melanated skin. We create products to celebrate our community with products that help them be seen. Butter’s is redefining the idea of beauty and love the skin that we’re born in. Butter’d has two products. 1. All Fluff” Body Cream that’s unscented to be inclusive to sensitive skin and simplify what our skin needs with 5 ingredients. 2. Hyper Mango was created to reduce the look of body scars with a light, mango scent.
We’re proud of our commitment to listening to our community and consumer. Butter’d honors the community by working with people of color internally and donating 1% to non-profit organizations dedicated to Black women.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
As being so early in the business world, I had to unlearn any attachment to anything regarding the business. I always have to make room for openness. I’m in the middle of upgrading our packaging. I was initially scared at the thought. It’s a major change so I take 100% fearlessness. In all, I love our new design and am appreciative of the help I’ve gotten along the way. The lesson was the unmarry those ideas and be open to change – no matter how hard it seems.
Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
We create Butter’d products in-house in Austin, Texas. I had to learn by being mentored by experts and trial and error, frankly. Our customers are our biggest critics so we ask them first if they liked our first product. As we scale, we’ll definitely outsource our manufacturing process. When we create products in-house, we can assure every batch passes quality control.
