Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brittany Burton. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Brittany, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about serving the underserved.
Serving the underserved is something I take pride in. Growing up in a low income household and neighborhood, made me have a different outlook on the world as far as the impact I wanted to have on the world. As an Award winning journalist, a big majority of why I entered this field is to be able to give a voice to the voiceless. I was once the voiceless, and I know how powerless it can be so being able to change that culture is something I am passionate about. I have shared many stories that represent the underserved including when I had the opportunity to interview Tupac Shakur’s sister Sekyiwa Shakur who’s story sometimes gets overshadowed by her famous brother’s legacy. I do not feel fulfilled if I am not helping others and using my gifts and talents to heal the world in the best way I know how. Being a journalist means so much to me because I know every day I have the ability to change someone’s life or situation.

Brittany, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Brittany Burton and I am an award winning journalist and entertainment publicist from Illinois. I got my start in the industry at 19 while studying journalism at Howard University by starting my own entertainment and fashion blog called “Enfired”. That led to me interning with DJ Drama at Mean Street Studios in Atlanta, GA in which I started running his blog called “Dramalikethedj”. At the same time i began working with the singer SZA creating original content for social media and creating and running her official fan page. Everything took off after that. I began writing for Huffington Post, Buzzfeed and several other sites. I eventually grew closer to SZA going on her first ever headlining tour in 2017 and entered into the public relations field a year later. Currently I offer PR marketing services to clients and potential clients to help increase visibility, social media presence, press opportunities, credibility and influence in the world. What sets me apart from others is my journalism background that has ultimately led to my success. I am most proud of becoming an Award Winning journalist in 2019 at the All Purple Gala in Washington, DC at the Smithsonian castle. What I want potential clients to know most about my work is that it is authentic, honest and designed only elevate any business, brand or persons.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Yes. I wish i would have understood and new the importance of having a mentor in your career field of choice. I feel like i would have progressed much further in my career and had certain opportunities more accessible to me. There are certain lessons I had to learn versus things being taught to me because of the lack of guidance. So for me, not utilizing and understanding the importance of mentorship earlier in my creative journey is the main resource I wish I would have knew about.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The biggest lesson I have had to unlearn is thinking I do not need any help and can do everything on my own. The backstory is that I am an only child so am not used to having people around to even ask for help. When it comes to business I began to get overwhelmed with the work load because there was no one I could collaborate with and I didn’t even know how to ask for help when I needed it most. When I finally broke that way of thinking, life got much easier, business increased and funds also. Everyone needs helps because we are all just one person and have to find balance and stability.
