We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brittany Borges. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brittany below.
Brittany, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
It started as a hobby so I felt free to experiment with what I wanted to create. I looked at other pieces of content and other creators and picked out what I liked and it made it more of my own. It was also a common interest in my friend group so naturally, we talked a lot about it and gave each other inspiration for our content.
When it comes to the business side of content creation and influencing, I would say college prepared me for it. I learned negotiation skills, how to organize and discipline myself, and the importance of networking.
I started my journey with this in 2019 but did not fully commit until 1-2 years ago. Knowing what I know now I realize the importance of intentionality. Before I was only posting pictures just showcasing my outfits. Now I like to try different types of content, sharing more of myself and my other interests. I believe you have to be open-minded in this industry due to the speed of change in social media. What worked yesterday may not work today and we have to be flexible.
Brittany, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Social media and content creation was a hobby at first and then I started to incorporate it into my work. I also think that because people may think this is a saturated market, they can’t excel or make their own mark. But each person has a different perspective and has a voice for a reason. Regardless of whether or not this is saturated, that’s not a good reason to not post what you want, or maybe too scared to post at all. Everybody is unique and brings something different; what you have to bring will connect with somebody.
I’d like for my community to know that even if you don’t have it all don’t let that deter you from what you want to do. It’s okay to be in a place where you’re still figuring it out. Take whatever you’ve been dealt with and make a decision on how you want your life to look moving forward. Build healthy and sustainable habits in all areas of your life for you.
How did you build your audience on social media?
The best way to build your social media presence is to just start posting by doing it organically and authentically. Post intentionally and consistently and that will strengthen your reputation. Even if this takes longer, it’s worth it.
If you’re just starting out and not sure about what you want to post, it’s important to experiment with all types of content. Pay attention to what you like to consume on social media and reflect on that. Try that type of content out and just start filming. Get into the habit of having your tripod already set up and film. If you’re going to do makeup, pick out an outfit, do your skincare/hair care, or a routine just film it.
You can worry about the specifics after you start. That will come as you film and edit more, and you’ll eventually find what you like to create.
The only thing that stands in the way of achieving your goals is your mindset. There are so many resources today and even more, than there were just a few years ago. Even communities you can join where people are on the same journey as you. One of the worst things you can do, though, is overcomplicate things. You only have to decide if this is something you want to do and just start. You don’t have to learn everything in a week, month, or year. Good things take time and little consistencies every day add up. Remember as well, it’s completely normal to have days where you question what you’re doing, but you have to establish at some point in your journey your why. How does it contribute to your purpose and what can you give back to your community.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I’ve had to pivot many times, but probably the most this past year. I found this last year to be extremely transformative for me.
I used to be the type of person who was very Type A. I had my whole life planned, and when things did not go as I planned, I would get very demotivated. It wasn’t until I started questioning the control that I needed to have that I realized I was unhappy. I thought I was the one who was in control. I decided I wanted to change and actually do the things that would make me happy, not the conventional things. I’ve realized in this journey how important faith is. It seemed impossible to change my situation, and the only way was to have faith in God, take action, and believe that all this is possible, and even more with Him.
