We recently connected with Brittany Borders and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittany, thanks for joining us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
Most everything I do strays from industry standard, but the thing I do best that is different is to shoot in direct sunlight. Most of my peers refuse to attempt direct sunlight shots due to the difficulty involved, but they’re my bread and butter. I absolutely love them and they’re worth the time and trouble required to get them just right, I’m also a large proponent of flash photography, and it is not currently industry standard. I have always been an out of the box photographer willing to take risks and capture images that may not align with current trends, but that make a statement.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Hi BBP here! Let me introduce myself a little. <— I would just like to add this above the rest of the text below.
So, that’s what it would look like.
Hi BBP here! Let me introduce myself a little.
I have loved photography for as long as I can remember. My Granny started buying me disposable cameras when I was about three. I grew up in an Army family and we were always traveling to wherever my mom and dad were stationed, providing lots of opportunity for new photographs. My Gran would mail the cameras to me, I would take the pictures, and the next time I saw her, we would develop the film and go over my pictures. She was a photographer who also taught photography, so she would show me where I cut someone’s feet off or how it was blurry, and then teach me how to fix whatever I did. We did this for most of my childhood. It wasn’t until I entered high school that my love of photography became the focus of what I wanted to do with my life. I got on the yearbook photography team, began taking photos, and really got into the process. When the yearbook was finally published, I was hooked! I loved seeing my images in print.
I decided I wanted to get a degree in photography and learn about the history of photography and new techniques and equipment, so, I went to college and earned my bachelor’s degree in Photography. While in college, I had my images hung in multiple museums and even purchased by an art collector in New York. Since graduating, I have worked extremely hard to get my own Photography business up and running, and I truly love what I do. I’ve been published nationally and internationally, and have recently photographed images used in a local magazine. I love knowing that I can help people remember the most important moments of their lives. I always tell people who are getting married that long after the cake has been eaten, their family has returned to their respective corners of the world, the people who you love are no longer with you, you’ll still have the images of your wedding day to remember those moments and people by. Photographs capture these special moments in time forever, allowing us to relive those feelings and emotions, which I find incredible.
I sincerely love what I do, and I wouldn’t change a thing about it!
Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
I got interested in doing some styled shoots in locations other than Florida to expand my client base and get some interesting new content for my social media. After I did a couple of them, I fell in love with the aspects of styled shoots and decided to host my own event with a peer in Las Vegas! Trying to arrange everything from half across the continent was a challenge in itself, but the other photographer ended up backing out of our event at the last moment and that’s when things got extremely stressful for me. As nerve-wracking as that made the process, I charged ahead with the event, went to Vegas, and killed it with the best participants ever! Everyone had a blast, my business partner and I learned a lot, and I now do styled shoots much more frequently.
After I did the Las Vegas shoot and posted some of the content, a bride to be contacted me inquiring about an elopement in Vegas because she saw my work from that event. I was booked the next day, they flew me to Vegas, and it was one of the best elopements I have photographed to date.
I can’t even describe how amazing this made me feel. Being chosen by these amazing people based solely on the content and quality of my work is every photographer’s dream.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I love knowing that after my clients have forgotten my name and have moved on with their lives, their children and grandchildren will be able to celebrate them and relive their special moments because of something I created. There is no greater feeling!
