We recently connected with Brittany Bobbs and have shared our conversation below.
Brittany, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry? Any stories or anecdotes that illustrate why this matters?
There is no personalization in mortgages. Every single person/family that I work with has a different situation. In the “big bank” mortgage world you click a few buttons online and you are given a preapproval and finally a mortgage. There is no conversation about what is actually financially best. Many people choose to work with a big bank or an inexperienced loan officer and walk away overpaying for their mortgage due to being put in the wrong program or rate/amortization schedule.
Brittany, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve been in this business for 17 years. My background is in operations management and underwriting. People know me as the girl that can make a loan work. There are so many rules and quirks in this business and so many horror stories of a lender just doing a loan wrong then 1 week before they are set to close on their home their lender calls them and says they can’t give them financing. Imagine being at your current place with all of your boxes packed and the mover scheduled and your kids start date at the new school set and the lender calls and says “sorry we can’t give you money for that house. Bye bye” there are no repercussions at that point, you are stuck. I am known in the area by realtors as the girl to call when a lender has done this to someone. I come in and clean up the mess. 9 times out of 10 I get them the financing they need because the other lender made a silly mistake that no one could find their way out of.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Being that my background was in operations and management in mortgages I previously was always on a salary. I decided to finally become an all commission loan officer after years of watching other loan officers making mistakes and cleaning up their messes (that was my job!). Switching to commission from salary was tough especially since I was a single mom and the time. I blew through all of my savings and finally had gotten down to my last loan request from my retirement account. I remember calling my best friend crying and told her that this was my last shot. I felt like I had failed. I took a shower and prayed, and when I got out I checked my phone and I had 2 different clients that went under contract, and it all began!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Being consistent, always picking up my phone, never giving up on a client even when it’s really a tough situation and other mortgage loan officers can’t get it done, and BEING KIND.
