We were lucky to catch up with Brittany Bloom recently and have shared our conversation below.
Brittany, appreciate you joining us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
The biggest risk I took was starting my business. For years, I was an interior designer for high-end residential and hospitality. I had spent many years studying interior design and have my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in it. While working at different firms I realized that office life was not for me. I am a people person and I do not belong behind a desk all day.
My husband and I had just returned from an almost 2 week vacation in Italy (celebrating our anniversary) and I all I could think about was how much I did not want to go back to work. It was in that moment that Eric told me that I had been talking about starting my own business for years and maybe it was time to do it. Two days later, I walked into work and put in my notice. No plan. no idea what I was doing, and zero experience in running a business. Later Eric told me that he had meant, let’s figure it out before quitting but hey, I was all in.
I took a month to figure out what I was doing, I knew I wanted to be in events as I was always the planner of my friend’s parties and had helped my sister-in-law with her wedding. I spent all my time figuring out how to start a business and immediately got my branding together. On top of that, we had just gone from a dual-income household to a single income and it was terrifying. I found work as a nanny with an incredible family who allowed me to work on my business while with them. I put in the work and I hustled, and within my first 6 months I had my first 6 clients. and it only kept growing from there.
The risk of leaving that stability paid off in so many different ways. I got to see what I was made of and in the process learned that I am a force to be reckoned with. I also got my happiness back. I get to work my own hours, spend more time with my family and truly love what I do.
Brittany, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was born and raised in Leawood, Kansas and will always be a midwestern girl. I got my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Interior Design, the latter from The George Washington University in DC. DC is where I started my interior design career and then continued it in Dallas, Texas. Once I realized that corporate life wasn’t for me, I quit my job and started my own business.
My 7 plus years of experience in this crazy world of weddings, along with my design background has given me the knowledge to not only a knock-out wedding but a planning experience with a unique perspective in curating the perfect experience and atmosphere for every wedding. Over the years, I’ve built an incredible team of planners, coordinators, and assistants that have become family.
As a business, B.Bloom Events & Design offers event management, full service planning, and several a la carte options to give clients the exact things they are looking for. We love working with people and are firm believers that love is love and we are here to support EVERYONE in that endeavor.
As we continue in the future, we will be offering mentorship programs for aspiring event planners and adding interior design services as well. I am currently partnered with a fellow planner, Kaitie Gill, in a project The Wedding Blue Book. We’ll be offering an exclusive vendor directory, education opportunities, and provide a space to showcase inspiration as well as real life weddings.
Beyond the world of weddings, I am a wife of 10 years and mom (to the cutest little boy – and 5 lovable fluffs). We spend our downtime traveling or at home enjoying the lake.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I honestly believe that I have the reputation that I do within the events industry because of my love, respect, and kindness for all my vendors and clients. I’m a huge believer in treating people the way you want to be treated and that goes hand in hand with working in collaboration. I find that way to get the best results for people are to listen and work with your vendors instead of telling them how to do their jobs. I try to always keep a smile on my face and let people know when they are kicking butt in their jobs – we all need that boost!
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Honestly, the best source of new clients has been vendor referrals! It genuinely means the world to me that vendors send clients my way – I must be doing something right!
