Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brittany Becker-Kravat. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Brittany, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My life and career are fundamentally shaped by the powerful combination of lessons taught by my parents. From my mother, I learned the importance of resilience and vision: that “where there’s a will there’s a way,” and the necessity of looking for what is unique while paying close attention to every detail—yet still knowing when not to sweat the small stuff. My father instilled a core professional discipline, emphasizing that patience is a virtue, urging me to always take a look at my surroundings, and insisting I think and plan ten steps ahead while maintaining a strict ethic to work hard and never cut corners. As a couple, they modeled confident leadership and service; they taught me to leave it all on the stage and put my best foot forward, to lead with confidence, and crucially, to just show up for others and handle conflict by being a boss who can “kill them with kindness.” These integrated values are the very foundation of the person and professional I am today. As a daughter, sister, aunt, mother, wife and friend, I live these values every day in how I show up for everyone in my personal life. As a psychotherapist, leader and mentor in my professional life, these qualities have shaped the way I lead and support others who work with me in the field. These values also shape the way I support my clients and see the resilience in each and every one of them and tailor everything I teach them to really meet them where they are at and who they are.

Brittany, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
HI! I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with extensive experience in supporting clients with complex clinical presentations, particularly young adults and their families. For years, I have worked to support clients and communities across NYC and Long Island, including as the Director of an intensive therapeutic center, a group facilitator in an OASAS-licensed outpatient facility, and the community education and prevention specialist for a non-profit focused on substance abuse issues. I am eager to bring all of my knowledge and the enthusiasm I have for the mental health field into my private practice!
I am also a mother, a partner, a friend, a daughter, and a mentor. I’m frequently people’s first call when they need a dose of positivity, some healthy perspective, and clear action steps to help them move forward from their problems, whether those problems are as simple as momentary frustrations or as complex as past trauma experiences. I believe in venturing beyond clinical textbooks, embracing my own experiences and collaborative brainstorming to craft personalized solutions.
I specialize in grief & loss, high anxiety, borderline personality disorder, executive functioning/“adulting”, addiction, trauma, body image, and mentoring mental health professionals. I also specialize in providing psychoeducation to families about the complexities of their loved one’s mental health, including explaining options for treatment and teaching family members how they can best support their loved one through their behavioral changes.
Warmth and intuition are hallmarks of my approach, creating a space where clients feel deeply understood and heard. Creative expression and problem-solving are integral to my practice. People often confide in me, recognizing my stability, unwavering support, and my ability to act as a partner in their journey toward mental well-being. My non-judgmental presence and consistent demeanor establish a safe and predictable environment where they feel empowered to confront their challenges and embark on the path to healing.
I believe that everyone is unique and deserves the space to share their story and receive the support needed to learn and grow into the healthiest and most authentic version of themself.
I work collaboratively with people to strengthen their sense of self and help them feel equipped with the necessary coping skills to manage all life transitions.
I provide individual and group therapy for adults 18+ who reside in NY, NJ and CT. I provide both in-person and virtual options for treatment. I also work with early career clinicians to provide consultation and mentorship.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
At an early age, I experienced a tragic loss in my family, which provided me with my first experience of my own therapy support. This support at the time was very loving and warm, and taught me how to channel feelings into artistic outlets. However, I believe unintentionally, the type of support I received inside the counseling room and out in the world was one that promoted and encouraged “happy good feelings” only, and this protected me for a long time and helped me to stay positive and persevere as a young person navigating grief before developmentally I could fully comprehend the emotional impact. I began to judge myself or others who had any other feelings different from happiness or gratitude and had to unlearn, as I grew up and began to get into school for counseling, that all emotions were necessary and served important purposes in ones life and the goal is to be able to feel the entire range of emotions and still feel protected and safe and “not too much”. I now make sure to allow myself to feel fully and can hold space for my clients big emotions without judgement and empower them to truly feel to heal! I now make it a point to encourage my clients to feel it all and gain a feeling of control by being able to use skills to tailor the intensity of emotions when they don’t fit the facts at any given moment, on their own terms and not by others standards or expectations.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I simply treat everyone the way I’d want to be treated. From colleagues to clients, I lead with my authentic genuinely curious self and I spread positivity and hope in the most down-to-earth possible way I can. I also am reliable, quick, detail oriented and go out of my way for others.
