We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brittany Barberian. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brittany below.
Brittany, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
In order to be both a business owner and licensed clinical mental health counselor, there needs to be a ton of balance. In previous employment, I did not feel like a human being with feelings, but more of a financial number. There seemed to be a lack of support to grow, and poor management styles. This is what lead me to opening Compass of Hope Counseling. Though I am the owner of the business, I value my employees as human beings and their opinions. For example, when in the process of interviewing potential candidates for employment, I will not make the decision alone. I invite my team to weigh in on how they feel about the candidate, and if even one person doesn’t feel good, we do not move forward. I believe that in order to be the best in the field, my clinicians need to be their best and have the best work environment possible. We have a strong team with an open door policy. There are times that it can be challenging to naviaged the role of boss and clinician, however, I believe I have created an honored relationship with my employees that allows me to also be human and have direct conversations as required. We have only been open since July of 2022, and we will soon have 9 total clinicians and almost a full practice. I think this speaks not only to the mental health pandemic, but also to the type of environment that allows clinicians to thrive and grow clinically while still understanding they are only humans too!
Brittany, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Compass of Hope Counseling is an outpatient mental health clinic located in Hooksett, NH that serves children, adults, couples and families with their mental health needs. We have clinicians who offer different evidenced based treatment modalities including EMDR, CBT, DBT, solution focused therapy, play therapy, CPP, dance movement therapy, substance abuse and much more! Because of the wide range of treatment options we have and the team consultation we engage in biweekly, you have the expertise of the whole team if needed to help you reach your goals! We strive to be the best and practice the most innovative approaches that work for quick symptom relief. Two of our clinicians are currently training in EMDR 2.0 and one of them is certified and working toward becoming a consultant. We work with individuals struggling with severe traumas, to adjustment disorders and all the stuff in between. We provide a safe and comforting environment for our clients to explore their deepest feelings and darkest memories.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I truly believe word of mouth is the best way to build our clientele. You can go to many therapists in the area, but hearing that our therapists made a difference, and that they didn’t have to come for years and years makes a huge difference.
Any advice for managing a team?
Interview, interview, interview! And trust your gut!
