SubscribeAlright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brittany Ballinger. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Brittany, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear how you think where to draw the line in terms of asking friends and family to support your business – what’s okay and what’s over the line?
This is a tough topic! I feel most people aren’t comfortable with having this discussion because it shows you who really supports you and who is around to benefit. I try not to ask friends/family to support me simply because I don’t feel I should have to ask and that’s just me as a supportive friend. I think giving away free products and/or services is going over the line as well as frequent discounts.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
My name is Brittany an Maryland native (Annapolis to be exact) I am the owner & founder of Sarah B. Cosmetics. I offer a variety of products such as lipsticks, lip glosses, eye lashes, eye shadow, lip masks, lip scrubs, and beard products. Much more to come!
My mission originated from me being a brown skin woman and feeling limited when it came to different shades of lipsticks and eye shadows. Also finding the right textured lip gloss. I wanted to create a line that didn’t cater to a specific race or complexion. I wanted to have a variety that everyone could explore and be a one stop shop.
I haven’t come across any problems. I”ve just assisted with finding the correct shade of lipstick or just educating my customers on my products and their benefits.
I’m most proud of the reviews I receive on my products. Of course my many accomplishments over the past three years that wouldn’t be about without my supporters and customers.
What makes me stand out from others is that I’m humble! I don’t take any of this forgranted and I work my butt off to maintain my brand which is apart of me and my reputation is very important. I don’t have any employees which means I am very hands on with my business. I’m customer service, do the marketing, in charge of inventory, packaging, and shipping.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
What helped me build my reputation within my market was definitely word of mouth. Having people that trusted and believed in me enough to support me and promote my business/brand. Oh, lets not forget the biggest platform social media.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
The time that I had to pivot which I’m sure we all can relate to is when Covid hit and we went into a pandemic. My business was fairly new had only been opened for 8 months. I was forced to close my business because there was no need for my cosmetics during that time. I had lost money because I had a full inventory that was just sitting and was still paying for a online store that wasn’t bring in sales.
