We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brittany Avery a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Brittany, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I started out providing home staging and redesign services for realtors and clients. While completing a few new home redesign projects, I could not find designs or color of decorative pillows I would need to bring the project together. Since I’ve always had a love for fabric and designs I started to do more research on fabrics and upholstery. One day I sat down at my sewing machine and decided to create my own. It came easy to be since as long as I can remember my mother would sew different things and kept me right beside her to teach me the ropes. I curated something magical that day and have been full steam ahead ever since
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hello my name is Birttany Avery owner and curator of The Elements Collection by Jillian. As a child, I enjoyed “reinventing the wheel” so to say. I rearranged bedrooms, played with different textures, patterns, and paint colors as well as dragged colorful pillows to different rooms of my home just to add a pop of color and a different feel of happiness. I never was content with any room staying the same but changing with the seasons.
As I got older, I gain instant joy from decorating my home to the point that friends and family would call me to decorate and design spaces in their homes as well. I never shy away from my passion even though I did take on a different career path. After the birth of my daughter, I was once again inspired to return back to my passion and first love Interior decor and design.
The Elements Collection by Jillian started with my belief in interior design and that no matter the space uniqueness should exist. I often found myself discouraged walking into home decor stores looking for full voluptuous yet modern pillows because well… there weren’t any!
Everything I would find was either dated or just didn’t fit the bill for the vision I was creating. With having a background in sewing, i just combined what I already knew and my love for beautiful modern textures and The Elements Collection by Jillian was born.
What sets The Elements Collection by Jillian apart from other brands would be my overall process. My collection is made with only the best of the best premium fabrics in which I handpick myself. All fabric are locally sourced and each pillow cover is hand selected and handcrafted leaving no detail untouched.
Being able to provide luxury pillow covers for people that love to change up their decor on a whim but also don’t have unlimited space for pillows as a whole is the goal. Pillow covers do not take up a lot of space therefore being space savers but also money savers as you can reuse your inserts and just change the covers whenever you feel and still have the luxury décor and look we all want in our homes.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I have been able to create a stronger emphases on content through social media channels. These activities have opened doors for more brick and mortar display opportunities such as events that were partnered with Nordstrom and West Elm. Recently, we have earned a fantastic opportunity to be one of the new vendors at Curate Crabtree. These activities have garnered extreme success for The Elements Collection by Jillian.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson that I had to unlearn was watching others paths and learn that my journey is my own. No matter how fast I saw others small businesses take off and grow or whatever trial or error I came up against my journey was my own. I had to get into my spirit that slow and steady wins the race and that my time would come to shine and my business would be just as successful as all the other small business that were growing by leaps and bounds. I just needed to believe that.
