We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brittany Adams. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brittany below.
Brittany , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you as a business owner?
Well, for starters, my career was initially in politics. Which is about as far removed from fashion/styling as it gets haha! I worked in Washington, DC for a few years post college – flying all over the country, working long hours, & loving it. I did fundraising & policy with a little event planning forcefully thrown in there too. I talk about it all the time but the skills you pick up in a fast paced, high stakes environment like that transcend to so many areas of life. Even aside from the media training that is, obviously, very relevant in today’s fully broadcasted – everyone is the star in their own tv show kind of world we’re living in. You learn the people skills to gain & keep ideal clients, the organizational skills, the ability to keep your cool under pressure, the inside & out understanding of PR, etc. I’m forever grateful.
Brittany , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I help people feel good about themselves. I take the pressure of “what the heck do I wear” out of the equation allowing you to focus on the big presentation you’re about to give or the date you’ve been excited about for weeks. My clients aren’t just coming to me searching for this seasons “it bag” they’re coming to me for confidence. It’s such an honor & it never gets old.
Whether we’re building your wardrobe from the socks up or styling you for a holiday party, my philosophy is always the same :: if you feel good, you’ll look good. Confidence is key. I encourage blunt honest feedback in the early stages of styling so we can accomplish something we’re both proud of. I’m highly competitive & I can’t be successful if you don’t feel ecstatic about the end result!
Most of what I do is remote which uniquely allows me to work with clients all over the country. Locally, I partner with a fantastic & incredibly inspiring photographer (ig @sonyakammes) to style her clients for pretty much any creative/editorial/everyday shoot she does. While the bulk of my work is capsule wardrobes & event styling, it’s so fun when I get to participate in the creative direction of these shoots. I’m always so proud of the work we produce when you get several creatives collaborating on the same project. That’s where the real magic happens.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Several years ago, my husband recommended I read “Essentialism” by Greg McKeown & it forever changed my perspective on life. I was a new mom & I, for whatever divine reason, chose to start my personal styling/influencing career while navigating life with a 3 month old – I needed all the help I could get! Based on the concept of “the disciplined pursuit of less” – it was like having an epiphany with every chapter. People pleasing is a chronic disease & far too many people treat things as urgent for urgent’s sake but you don’t have to be one of them. Once you realize that “no” is a complete sentence, your quality of life (& your business) will improve.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I grew up in Tennessee (my first born’s name is Nashville!), went to college at The University of Alabama, lived in DC for several years, & I now live in southern Wisconsin – I have first hand knowledge & experience with such diverse cultural style & influences. I like to push the envelope when it comes to personal style. I wore nike tennis shoes with my wedding dress while my husband to be was in a tux. I love mixing athletic with glam, wearing silk pjs & high heels to a nice dinner, adding in pops of color where you’d least expect it – the more ironic the better. It’s such a gratifying moment when I get messages from followers sending me posts of out of the box looks or crazy pieces because it “reminded them of me”. My goal is to help you find the balance between staying true to yourself & pushing outside of your comfort zone. Plus the fun part is walking the walk – I’m not just pushing my clients to be creative with their wardrobe, I do it with my own style as well.
