We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brittanie McGee a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Brittanie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
Being a small dog training company who works in my own home allows for a very personalized training experience for the dog and the owner! The typical dog training/daycare facility tends to have a large number of dogs, living in a very unstructured, highly stimulating environment all day long. Most dogs struggle with that type of environment, which is why I offer a unique in-home setting where your dog has their own safe space in my spare bedroom, their own fenced in yard and safe neighborhood for walks and playtime. I am able to tailor every day to the schedule that your dog needs and they have plenty of quiet, downtime to rest and take in all their learning!
Brittanie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started my own dog training business almost 2 years ago now after working as an assistant dog trainer for 2 years prior. I became obsessed with dog training after working with my own trainer with my first German Shepherd, Milo. I saw how my relationship with my dog changed for the better and how much more I enjoyed living life with him and I wanted to give that to other struggling dog owners who may be living with a dog who only adds extra chaos to their daily lives. I provide in person and virtual dog training services that help dog owners learn how to stop their dog from pulling them on walks, barking at guests, bolting out the front door, counter surfing, and any other problem behaviors they may have! I want to help you build a foundation to a better life with your dog. Dog training is never ending, but it does not have to be overwhelming. I am able to teach owners in a way that keeps things simple, so you can actually have a well behaved dog long term and not just during “training sessions”.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth is huge in the dog training industry. It is a big deal to send your dog somewhere for 3 weeks with a new person! Most of my new clients who reach out for my in home training program are friends of someone whose dog has been through my 3 week board and train program in the past. My 2023 goal is to share more content on social media and build an online presence so I can help more people virtually!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I am DEFINITELY no expert on this topic, but it’s something I’ve been learning about a lot recently as building a social media presence is a big goal of mine for 2023! Some things I’ve learned as a newbie is:
1. get Canva pro! It is the best design service for someone who is not an expert in design
2. strive to post DAILY! I’m currently posting 3x a week and will get to daily one of these days
3. batch your content every 2/4 weeks at a time. The app Later is a great one for scheduling posts so it’s not so overwhelming to try to keep up with
