Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brittani Millington. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Brittani, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I was tinkering with an idea for a few months. But I was afraid to pull the trigger on it even though I’ve always wanted to do it.
It was getting published. I wasn’t sure how to go about it, but I eventually figured it out.
As a small business owner, I found it hard to track progress while in the thick of it. For many years, I felt stuck in the same place I was the year before or had yet to make progress.
While consulting with business owners, I noticed I wasn’t the only one that felt like that. Even more so, I realized we have a hard time seeing the growth we have made even when others see it.
Then, the idea of the business growth journal came to life. To serve as a guide for business owners in areas we must identify for ourselves.
However, I almost didn’t create this journal!
I worried if it would be received well, if people would wonder who “I” was to create this, and if my viewpoint would matter and help someone. There was so much inner doubt about putting my thoughts and process to paper.
Still, with all the doubt, procrastination, and imposter syndrome, I finally created the journal and published it! Do you know what the funny thing is? Creating this journal and all the things that have come from it have been more than I can imagine in such a positive way. All because I wanted to help entrepreneurs like myself.
It was a significant risk for me to put out this journal because I had never done it before and invested a lot into getting it out there. I did not expect the huge support I received from clients (present and past), friends, and family. Also, this business growth journal created more business opportunities. I had an official launch to conclude a branding workshop series I conducted for the City of West Palm Beach. It’s one of my most successful product launches. Also, I loved seeing business owners getting it for themselves and accountability partners, along with business programs getting it for their vendors or bosses for their employees.
I’m so proud of myself for not getting in my own way to put this business growth journal out!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a creative problem solver for brands and entrepreneurs who desire to deliver the experiences they create beyond their products and services.
Growing up amidst small businesses, I was captivated by their resilience and growth. I learned that while fancy marketing, designs, branding, and websites are essential, the real backbone of a business lies in the effort, consistency, story, and connection with people.
These elements fuel the business and equip it to withstand adversity and bounce back stronger. This realization ignited a desire within me to start a small business where my creative soul and strategic approach can help others achieve their visions.
Fast-forward to today: I live in South Florida as a wife and mother and run my small strategy and design studios.
I’m the founder and creative director of BM Design and Studio 113. Studio 113 is a branding and design studio, and BM Design educates small businesses on leveraging their current branding. I have over a decade of experience promoting businesses through branding and online experiences. I have worked and partnered with diverse clients and brands, including Squarespace, SOBEWFF®, Sunfest, Whole Story Studio, and the City of WPB. I also educate small businesses within my local community and online.
As a woman of color leading an intentional brand strategy and design studio, I aim to transform a brand’s visions into successful brands. I truly believe that with the right mindset, roadmap, and identity system, any brand owner can create the experience and growth they’ve desired in their brands.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
There are a few main ways I do this. One is sending periodic emails or messages on social media. I make them conversational and genuinely interested in what’s new and up with them. Yes, it takes time, but I think of it like sending a short text to a friend. Also, I’ve started sending out growth business journals I created to my clients that I sell as a gift. It’s a great gift and helps them keep track of actions in their business. Another thing I do is utilize my newsletter with Flodesk. It’s a great way to share current happens, stories, tips, and exclusive offerings as well.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
“The Win Without Pitching Manifesto” by Blair Enns and “Atomic Habits” by James Clear are my current reads. One book has helped me be more confident in what I bring to the table and say, “My price is my price.” The book is aiding me in building better habits in my life to make them more enjoyable and functional. Especially with being a mom, I want to enjoy being in the present more and make room for all the things I would like to do in my life.
