We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brittani Bo Baker a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Brittani Bo, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Growing up I used to cater from home with my family. My brother and I would have to wake up at 5am to “chop & dice”, rub ribs, and prepare our southern side dishes, when we were in school my parents would cater, after school the dishes were waiting on us to get ready to do it all over again the next day. On the weekends when we weren’t catering from home we were setting up barrel grills on the street corners selling dinners, or demoing our BBQ sauces in grocery stores. In 2006 my parents opened a restaurant where I worked every position learning hands on the ins and outs of the restaurant business. When my parents decided to close the restaurant the passion for our brand had been embedded in my heart & soul so I started a food truck to carry on my families BBQ Legacy. After 3 successful years in the food truck business many people started to reach out asking me how they too could fulfill their dreams of food truck ownership, and BBQ consulting was formed (Brittani Bakers Quality Consulting). I’ve always had a passion for helping people, so being able to help people create a business that not only provides financial freedom, but also helps people achieve a goal that to many may seem out of reach is super fulfilling for me.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Growing up in the restaurant business I saw many challenges that my parents faced as entrepreneurs, and I learned that there’s a solution to any and every problem you just have to be willing to find the solution. I learned that there’s no dream too big. My dad and I are the coo inventors of the Patented Boneless Ribs as seen on Shark Tank, and a couple summers ago I had the opportunity to compete on Food Networks BBQ Brawl. I say this after saying that no dreams are too big because I’m both instances people told me I wouldn’t be able to achieve these goals but I kept on trying until I did. Now I help others who have dreams and goals that may seem out of reach to some achieve their goals. I start with a 1 on 1 consulting to find out where you are at in your path to food truck ownership then together we map out a plan and go to work on helping you achieve your ultimate goal of food truck/ restaurant ownership. I cant Tell you how many people tell me this is what they want, but they don’t know where to start, that’s where I come in.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I’m so passionate about helping people achieve their goals/dreams of food truck/ restaurant ownership because I’ve been there before. I know what it’s like to have a vision for something and want it so bad but not know where to start or how to achieve it. Before I started my own food truck it was a dream of mine to own a food truck. I had written numerous business plans and tried to get financing from multiple banks for years but it wasn’t working for many reasons. At the time I didnt have collateral, and the banks were all telling me to try again at a later date. I remember one day balling my eyes out to my brother James saying I want a food truck soo bad I just don’t know how I’m going to make it happen, and he told me “it’s just not your time yet but don’t give up!” & I didn’t I continued to improve on my business plan, hone in on my projections and seek financing from non traditional sources, and eventually I was able to purchase a brand new 22’ food trailer, it was literally a dream come true.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Originally I was looking for financing from banks, but because I didn’t have collateral at the time, it was just an idea, and food trucks weren’t as popular as they are now when I was first trying to get financing for a truck I was having a hard time getting approved for traditional bank loans, but I didn’t give up. I started telling all my friends and family about my plans, and was eventually able to raise enough to start my food truck business. People I didn’t even expect to invest did, so my advice to you is If you are shy about your business don’t be. Have a business plan and projections ready at all times. (I can help you get these together) a business plan helps you think through every aspect of your business, how and where you are going to operate it, market it, and the projections help you determine how much you’ll need to get started as well as project how much you can potentially make. (If you stick to your business plan)
