Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brittaney Morrison. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Brittaney, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
My journey toward becoming a Licensed Esthetician and owning my own business happened during a very dark time in my life. However, it was the most impactful experience. It placed me in an atmosphere where I was surrounded by many women who had such empowering life stories. I was surrounded by absolute Queens. These Queens would remind me daily that I too was a Queen! I realized that my business was going to go deeper than just skincare. I was going to pay it forward and empower anyone who walked into my treatment room the way my girls did for me!
Brittaney, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As someone who once struggled with severe acne, I never thought I’d be in the industry I’m working in today. Little did I know it would allow me to have empathy and a full understanding for my clientele. As we know, acne takes a physical and emotional toll. I became a Licensed Esthetician in January of 2022 and didn’t waste any time before getting my business off the ground. I instantly continued my education at the Dermalogica Institute where I was trained by several of their Master Estheticians. I then became certified in many other skills, including becoming an Acne Specialist. I now have had the honor to work with an elite clientele that trust me with their skin. In addition, I have had the honor to educate at several schools. I have a huge passion for supporting other estheticians and empowering them in any way that I can. This led me to create a merch line for estheticians. I felt like it was the perfect way to combine my passion for our industry and my love for fashion and a way to bring all of us Estie Besties together.
I could not have gotten this far if it weren’t for the resilience and work ethic that my parents instilled in me from an early age. They taught me not to stop at “dreaming BIG” but to work hard to get it. Owning a business takes stepping out of your comfort zone, messing up, trying again, sleepless nights, and a lot of sacrifice. I always say, “Do it afraid” and when it gets tough I challenge myself to at least do one thing to get me closer to my goals. During the building process, it’s important to surround yourself with uplifting people. There are days when I get down on myself and I’m lucky to have such a supportive group of friends and family around me. It wasn’t always that way which has made me realize when you’re doing life or building out your dreams, who you’re surrounded by is everything and more!
For my practice, Queen B Skin, I have enjoyed being able to educate men and women from the ages of 13 to 90 on best skincare practices and effective ingredients/products for their skin. What is even more special to me is the bond I create with my clients. You become a safe space and go through life with them. The dynamic I have with my clients is professional but I also laugh and cry with them when they confide in me. I truly care for my people and it’s never something I’ll ever take for granted. I feel honored every day that they’ve chosen me as their Esthetican.
In everything I do, whether it’s in the treatment room for Queen B Skin or in styling my merch for Show Some Skin Apparel, I always try to bring some edge and whit. This brings me to how I got the name for Show Some Skin Apparel. This one makes me laugh because I wanted a name that would raise some eyebrows and make the audience curious. I would say we nailed that! HA! In esthetics we want our clients to feel comfortable in their skin “daring to bare” (as stated on one of the hoodies) their natural skin with confidence. Showing their skin and still feeling like they SLAY no matter which part of their skin journey they may be on. Any Esthetician will tell you healthy skin trumps perfect skin, so I made sure to include that on a dad hat which has become one of our top-sellers along with our Esthetician Tee that has gone viral. We included whitty sayings that act like inside jokes for estheticians. Examples include, ‘let’s get steamy’, ‘I’d extract that’, ‘i love acid’, ‘skintuition’, and more! Definitely had fun with this piece!
Overall, my passion for skincare has turned my dreams into reality. I am excited about creating more looks for Show Some Skin Apparel and continuing my education to grow my skill set. I hope to take my passion for educating and empowering other estheticians to higher heights and not putting a cap on my dreams! We’ll see where it takes me because we’re only getting started!
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Word of mouth and social media have been the best sources for bringing in new clients. It’s a beautiful thing when someone says, “I’m sending my best friend to you!” or, “I told my brother to come and get his facial by you!” When someone trusts you with someone they love, that is probably one of the biggest compliments you can receive in this line of business.
Social media is a job of its own but a lot of my clients for Queen B Skin and mostly all of my customers for Show Some Skin Apparel have found me on social media. This truly acts as your portfolio but also gives you a chance to connect with your audience and show your personality. I want people to feel comfortable with me before they come in for their appointments so the way I do that is by being silly and vulnerable on social media in a way that also educates. This allows for people to get a taste of what they’ll get from me as their esthetician.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Unfortunately, the start of my Esthetician career was by far the hardest. I was living in Florida and in a marriage that was stripping me down emotionally. When we decided to separate, I was left with absolutely nothing financially. Driving from Florida back to my hometown in California, I spoke with an esthetician school and started enrollment before arriving back to Cali. I didn’t know how I was going to afford school, but I knew I had to. It was time to do something for myself. Something that wouldn’t have been celebrated in my marriage. The emotional manipulation and financial abuse continued every day but I had to brave it and show up for myself each day. If you’ve ever been in a situation like this or have known anyone who has been a victim of abuse, you know how deep and dark it can get. I hope you know I feel for you and I see you. School had allowed me to grow friendships that spoke life into me when I couldn’t find it in myself. To this day I will forever be thankful for these instructors and friendships. It saved me.
