We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brittanee Brown a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittanee , thanks for joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
I have always been an athlete my entire life so conditioning and training have always been a part of my training routines. I had never really taken training seriously until the loss of my auntie. She had developed health issues which further led to a sudden heart attack from being severely overweight at the young age 35 years of age.
Her sudden passing inspired me to dedicate my life to helping women through health and fitness of all ages, sizes, shapes, and colors! After 6 years of dedicating my life to personal training, it inspired me to create and open my all-women fitness studio: Bfitbwell Fitness Studio in 2022!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Founded in 2022, Bfitbwell Fitness Studio has become a haven for all women in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. We are dedicated to providing a safe non non-judgmental space for women to explore what it means to build physical strength while renewing their mindset and simultaneously healing emotionally and connecting with other like-minded women. We are dedicated to empowering women and providing an experience for women who are ready to make a change.
We believe it is essential to invest in every area of who you are as an individual to maximize your potential relationships and elevate your well-being. “We are more than just a body.” BfitBwell Fitness Studio offers a wide variety of exercise options, ensuring that you can accomplish ANY fitness goal that you may have. Including everything from personal training, small group training, free weights, cardio, battle ropes, kettlebells, and cold-pressed juices!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Opening AND owning a business is not for the weak and faint at heart! The fear of jumping into an unknown territory without many years of knowledge is extremely SCARY with a capital S!
I can recall a story from my journey before I first opened my fitness studio. In the beginning of Bfitbwell I set a date for a grand opening but the air conditioning had a leak in it and it was in JUNE! Luckily my dad is handy with everything and took care of it right away! Which is why it is important to have a great set of people holding you down because you can’t do it by yourself!
Of course, you may not get it right the first second, or third time but the important lesson is to NEVER stop trying and to keep a solid circle of individuals who want to see you win just as much as you do if not more. I constantly leaned on my mom (still do lol), my husband, and my dad who built every piece of equipment that I have in the gym which took a HUGE load off!
Some of the challenges of gym ownership are maintenance, client retention, and knowing who your competitors are. Choosing a great location while offering training facilities at competitive prices is monumental to succeeding as a gym owner.
You have to constantly keep thinking of new innovative ways to keep clients consistent and keep revenue flowing! Without constant revenue, a lot of new gyms failed within the first year! But I know hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard!
Juggling clients, my husband, my full-time job, and now finding out I’m a first-time expecting mother is no walk in the park and takes hard work, but I would NOT trade it for anything! Even though vacation calls my name the majority of the time hahaha!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The lesson I have to unlearn is : Asking for help is not a weakness.
Growing up as a black woman in this world, we are always perceived to be strong and if we asked for help we would be considered weak; but as I got older and started working with women in fitness I have learned that help is not a weakness. In fact, it takes courage and strength to recognize when you need assistance and to reach out for support. Everyone encounters challenges and could benefit from the expertise or guidance of others at some point in their lives. Seeking help is a proactive and positive step towards personal and professional growth.
When I started Bfitbwell Fitness Studio, it was NO WAY I could have helped it grow and turn out amazing without the help and assistance of my family and close friends.
It was so/ still is so many moving to opening and owning a business and with my business partner being my mom she has assisted me tremendously with keeping the business amazing!
