We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Britt Von Bossy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Britt, thanks for joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I started my business for many reasons but I whole heartedly have to say that it was all the bad experiences with male photographers they led me to become the creator I am. It’s no secret, women are sexy. Women are walking art. Every curve, every scar, every pore. We enjoy feeling sexy. It’s very empowering to me. You know what’s not empowering… Modeling for a man who hyped you up to shoot with him, getting to the shoot feeling lost, him asking you to get nude, you believing you can trust him like you would any professional, and then him not returning any of the photos, or worse showing them to his friends. Time and time again i and my friends were taken advantage of by male photographers in many ways. Why do we have to be victims for wanting to be comfortable and giving our trust ? It’s unfair. That’s why I started shooting photography. I want to give women & the queer community a safe place to be comfortable with their bodies & celebrate their sexuality without being taking for granted. On top of being fed up with the fact that women are being taking advantage of, I’m a retired sex work of nearly 10 years. I hardly consider myself retire since a huge chunk of my clients are sex workers of all kinds!
I respect sex work & I think it has its ups and downs just like any job. I love to help & work with as many sex workers as possible.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
If you haven’t heard … it’s Britt Von Bossy bitch! I am a film photographer out of Austin,Tx. I’m self taught & perfecting my craft everyday. The thing about film is that in one roll of film you get 24-36 shots to snap something incredible. I take great pride that I capture magic in such a small number of shots. Think about it, How many selfies do you take before you love it? Digital artist have the freedom to snap 500-5000 photos of the same shot if they want to. Film artist have to work magic in a small small amount of shots. Film is also NOT cheap. You have to pay for the film, pay for scan & development, and potentially edit. Film has also been in and out of stock for the past two years. Sometimes out of stock for months. The struggle of being a film artist is real but so worth it.
Has your business ever had a near-death moment? Would you mind sharing the story?
I do a lot of outdoor “boudoir” photography and let me tell you to find some of the coolest places you have to be willing to take risks. For one particular shoot awe trespassed onto a construction site. ( see pics attached) As you can see, risking to committing a crime to snap these bad boys. We got through most of the shoot just fine. Exploring the dunes of tar and rock. Snapping these dusky & apocalyptic images. We had 10 photos left or so & then a big truck pulls up and asks us what we were doing… we froze ! This gentleman with a lady in the car were starring at us. He seemed to have worked there from my understanding. My model, Nekomata Gear, & myself were just is a hurry to grab our things and split the scene. We didn’t want to get the cops involved. It was my first time being caught. Since we had those last 10 images, We stayed near and finished the last of the images on a train tracks near by. All in all, I’d do it again.
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
This might sound lame but I really use Instagram a lot. It’s kind of a bummer sometimes because Instagram is always shadow banning and removing content. That can be frustrating. I really love to use social media to my advantage. It’s worked wonderfully for me. I mean everyone is a on social media platform at least several times a day. Well same here. I also build great relationships with alot of the models and want to support them too. My Instagram is @brittvonbossy , @brittvonbossyxfilm, and @vonbossyprojects. I have so many because I’m worried my main account will get shut down ( @brittvonbossy )
