Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Britney Jayy. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Britney, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Art is subjective and I feel like sometimes people forget that. It has been quite the journey getting to where I am today, but I am still not where I need to be. I have never had any proper music training or guidance, so everything I have acquired and learned has been self-taught. I take pride in my path and I genuinely wouldn’t change a thing.

Britney, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Music and poetry have always been the root to my existence. For as far back as I can remember, I recall filling lined notebooks up with poetry about life, non-existent love, and the possibilities of life. There was a point of time where I felt confident enough to submit my work through a couple of poetry contests and in that I was able to win some awards and publications. This, as you can imagine boosted up my confidence and expanded my creative journey. From there I would begin writing instrument-less songs, to melodies that were floating in my head daily. It wasn’t until after graduating highschool and in my first years of college where I would actually get to utilize the God given gift I was blessed with – my voice. I started off in a 3-girl group which I sang mainly background vocals for, and you can say that balanced my confidence. In my mind I wasn’t good enough to sing lead, but on the other hand I was grateful to be doing what I actually loved to do. Eventually we disbanded, and that’s when my dream started to come alive. I was able to fufill my dream of being a lead singer and songwriter/lyricist.
What inspires me so much about myself is how I never stopped and kept going on my dream. Most of it was trying to prove others wrong, including myself, but it was a fire that I needed.
It feels like yesterday when I would hope and wish to one day be able to record and arrange my own songs. Starting off my singing journey in studios with producers and vocal geniuses, I’ve always appreciated the process and talent it took to make a song. However, because I was never professionally trained in this art, it was something I wanted to learn eventually, but to be quite honest I didn’t think I would actually be able to attain it.
Fast-forwarding to almost 10 years later, and I am writing, recording, and arranging my own music in the comfort of my home and it feels soooo bittersweet. The feeling is indescribable knowing that people are listening to your work that you put hours into, and I wouldn’t change this feeling for a THANG!
I am now a Pro-Member on SoundBetter where I offer my singing and songwriting services to artists all around the world. Every review that I received brings tears to my eyes and warmth to my heart, because sometimes I have to remind myself you are really doing this Britney! Because of SoundBetter, i’ve also been blessed with an agent who has booked me for commercials and demo jingles with Netflix, Zales, Charmin, Apple, etc.. When I look back to 7 year old me, I wish I could give her a hug and say thank you. Thank you for setting the tone, thank you for being the start of my journey that is no where near being finished.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
To be honest, my audience on social media has fluctuated. But one thing has always been true and that is ” I am always myself”
As goofy and random and sometimes wild I am, I know that there are also people out there that are just like me. The point of making art and being an artist is making things that people can relate to.
It wouldn’t make sense for me to paint a facade that I couldn’t uphold. I try to stay away from the industry-looking posts and go for something that seems relatable. The way i engage and the way I promote is basically like im speaking to a group of friends, and I think that’s important.
Whenever I do build a bigger fanbase, I want them to feel connected with me through my music, through my posts, and most importantly if we meet in person.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Aside from music I am very BIG on mental health.
I mentioned writing poetry when I was younger, but what I didn’t share is that I was always to myself and would like to isolate in my room. For those that know me, know that I have cut my hair off a couple of times due to a mental health break. This act started when I was younger before my teens. I would cut my hair from time to time whenever I felt a moment of emptiness, stress, or sadness. It got to a point where my mother would have to hide the scissors from me. When i was 24, that’s when things started taking a turn, a turn that I was not familiar with. I was diagnosed with moderate-severe depression + anxiety and I was put on watch. I had mandatory therapy sessions and I had to take prescription to keep me balanced. Though it was a life change that I had to adapt to, things started making so much sense to me, and instead of sulking in my mental illness, I decided to take this and make it into something I could help others in.
I started “check’n in” which is every 15th of every month with my non-profit called @ohhifren.
It’s a way for people to check in on those around them whether it be someone close, or someone they hardly know. The point is to make someone feel “seen” in that moment. Help someone know that their presence is needed and they are loved. And if we could all just continue to take a moment out of our busy lives to check in on someone, then we could learn so much more about each other.
