Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Britney Flanning. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Britney thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
There are a lot of artists that are trying to make it in the industry. I’ve dealt with a lot of local artists, wanting quality dancers at a low-cost, which is not fair to us. Expect us over and beyond for them with limited or no pay and that’s not right! And because we love Dance so much we take it because it’s an opportunity. We might be able to work at the event or just leave it where it’s at! We understand that the local artists are trying to make it just like we are but at the same time we’re still providing a service to help their performance elevate them to the next level! I’ve learned that people Will use you for what you got till they can get better and kick you to the curb! Value and know your worth because it’s gonna be one person out there that’s gonna let one of your baby toes in the door and you will be unstoppable. Keep progressing never stressing!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started dancing when I was three years old in the church. We used to go to church Monday through Sunday with my Auntie/ Mama Marvie… And I knew it was good because I was catching up faster than the other girls and our praise dance. As I got older the Basic dances used to bore me and I used to help out making up the dance be more hip-hop! So my Godsis (Zenobia Edwards) who I’ve known since middle school told me about This team she was on call Everyone’s Youth United Bobcats. We was non profit organization band. The coach Gwenetta Martin What is the coach and she taught us how to execute the moves. That’s why we were so unstoppable. Everyone hated on us. Fast-forward to the present day, I moved here to Georgia from Florida in 2013. And I join a YEEK team CALLED ATL Bomb Squad! We were the top squad to beat on anyone’s turf! We have power moves to shut everything down in one transaction! My coach Nate Dodson is the founder and CEO of the team and it’s been going on for 40+ yrs…. This is the team where I met both of my best friends, Brittany Atkins and Monika Hobbs. In 2019 I branched off and created my own dance team called L3gaxy Dance squad with the help of Lakesha Tenny. We are a mixture of hip-hop, Florida Buckin and ATL Yeek style dancing! I am so proud of myself to have had a team to stick by me and me showing them how to dance is the best feeling in the world! We were family oriented. It didn’t matter where you came from. We had each other’s back and still do always and forever! If your looking for dancers go check us out! @l3gaxydanceproductions
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I want to dance on an award show! I really wanna dance on the Disney Channel! I could even play like a high school best friend crazy girl type role! It’s my dream to be on the Disney Channel!!! If y’all are reading this, let Disney know I’m ready!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of me being a background dancer is all the hype we get from the audience!! If we don’t have the audience, jumping and shouting while we dance and we’re not doing something right! Give us our motivation and our energy to do what we love on that stage! Leave it all on stage because you never know when you will have to stop! I go hard and go harder because it’s more than just my craft, but this is my livelihood to support me and my kids! Being a influencer gives me joy for having people look up to me and make decisions based on how I live or how I dance or what I do so everything that I do, do; I make sure is the best interest for my audience!
