We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Britna Savarese. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Britna below.
Alright, Britna thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
I think sooner. If you asked me at 10 years old what I dreamed of becoming, then I would’ve unequivocally said “a mortician!” At 10, the only death worker I knew of was a mortician, so that is why I chose that profession to pursue initially. Had I known at a younger age that death doulas were a thing, my life would have taken a much different trajectory. I am so happy to be doing this work now though.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Growing up, I was deeply moved by time spent in the local funeral home for occasional visitations and funerals. Ted the mortician had the respect of the community, and he helped families during one of the most difficult times of their lives. I wanted to help too and attended mortuary college after high school, but this career path did not lead me to the work I felt called to do.
I admit to feeling lost, as my life-long dream sat unrealized for years while I searched for my true calling. Then I found a video of Alua Arthur. As she described Death Doula work, I knew that was my life-long dream. Death work – specifically being of service to people in this realm – is my life’s work and greatest honor.
I specialize in offering customized guidance and support to help people as they plan for the end-of-life. I help my clients navigate the complexities of death planning. I believe that the dying process is a deeply personal and transformative journey and am committed to fostering an environment that allows individuals to embrace their end of life with peace, serenity, and dignity. My services encompass:
– Holistic Care: Integrating therapies such as music, touch, aromatherapy, and gentle movement to ensure comfort and serenity throughout the dying process.
– Legacy Planning: Assisting individuals in creating a lasting legacy by capturing their stories, values, and wisdom to be cherished by future generations.
– Grief Support: Offering compassionate bereavement support to help families understand and navigate the grieving process.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
People can sense that I am passionate about the work I do, and that I truly care about curating “the best” death for them. They know I will hold a safe, non-judgmental space for them to work through their end-of-life planning, fears around dying, and their grief. Whether it is someone facing their own death, the death of a loved one, or someone wanting to just plan ahead, I have a strong desire to help. I also host a monthly Death Café and am available for public speaking engagements.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Referrals and word-of-mouth promotion are key to growing my business. I do public speaking engagements and educational seminars to help get my name out there. I look for every opportunity to discuss death and the work I do. The more people know about death doulas, the more they will see the benefit and support one provides.
