We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Britan Gwyn a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Britan, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I worked on was an album called “Uptown State of mind” with my cousin “Glory Lives” before he changed his name from “Kid Glory”. I remember moving back to New York City after high school to study audio production at HOSTOS community college. During my time there, I found out Glory was pursuing a career in music and was looking to build with producers and artists. I was very much a beginner and had never worked with anyone professionally. It was my first shot and I wanted to give my all. We would regularly link up at my house or his house to work on beats and write songs together. I spent hours on end trying to create a unique sound that we could be proud of. All I had was a laptop, fairly decent monitors, some studio headphones and our ideas. I learned that no idea is to crazy or far fetched. You just have to put the time, energy and effort into making things real. Uptown state of mind taught me patience, care, openness and having pride in my work. There are people in the world who appreciate your efforts and persistence. I carry all the lessons from that very first project into every one that followed. I use it as a guild to producing even more creative, intentional and in-depth works.
Britan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Britan Gwyn. Statz is my stage name. Im an artist, producer and songwriter from Harlem, NY. I got into the industry in 2011 after going to community college for audio production. I have 11+ years experience in making music in this industry. All of my skills are pretty much self taught. I’ve gained my experience through working with other creatives alike. It’s made me better through trial and error. I provide songwriting, beat production, song features and recording services. I can cover all your music production needs. What sets me apart from others is my one on one experiences with artists. I build personal bonds with who I’m working with first. Create chemistry in the relationships then make the art. I believe building that connection helps best to create deep, intimate and unique creative sessions that push you beyond what you believe is to be possible. I’m most proud of the growth in myself and my sound. There are no boundaries just possibilities. If you try everything, eventually you’ll figure out what it is you love to do. Be curious and experimental. Enjoy your life and all the little things it has to offer. Words that I live by.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the connection to the listeners and people you interact with. Naturally as humans we crave interaction with others. I’m inspired through those experiences most.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
my creative journey is driven by my desire for true freedom. I want to live a life without boundary and/or restriction. Where time and money are limitless. And I can spend my time with the people and things I love the most.
