We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brit June. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brit below.
Brit, appreciate you joining us today. Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
Gather ’round, dear reader, for I’m about to regale you with a tale of entrepreneurial misadventure that’ll make you laugh, cringe, and applaud our tenacity all at once. Picture it: a few years back, my business partner and I found ourselves in the clutches of what we now fondly refer to as the “Threads of Fate F*ck Up 2018.”
You see we’d birthed two distinct, yet eerily similar products. Imagine twins separated at birth, only with packaging instead of cribs. These items were our babies, born from the same creative womb but dressed in wildly different outfits. We couldn’t contain our excitement as we sent a massive order hurtling towards our e-commerce site and international brick-and-mortar pals.
But hold on to your hats, because here comes the plot twist! Just as our cargo ship set sail, one of our wholesale partners sent us a message with the gravity of a Shakespearean tragedy: “Hey, folks, did you know your products have the same name? Hope that’s intentional?”
Cue the epic freak out. Panic ensued. Thousands of beautifully mislabeled products were sailing toward us, oblivious to their own identity crisis. The prospect of slapping stickers on luxury Tarot card boxes with gold foil hot stamping? About as plausible as taming a unicorn with a toothpick.
After the initial “deer in the headlights” moment and a chorus of nervous laughter, we did what we do best: problem solving. Rush orders for revised boxes were executed with the urgency of a Formula 1 pit crew and we conjured a creative campaign that was pure gold, almost as gold as those boxes.
We decided to humanize our business, quirks and all. We threw in some cheeky, free items with orders, emblazoned with “TOF F*CK UP 2018,” and guess what? People loved it. We embraced our mistake with open arms, admitting that, hey, sometimes things sneak past you, no matter how vigilant you are.
This little stumble turned out to be a colossal leap forward. In an era where everyone presented their businesses as flawless monoliths, we stood up and said, “Hey, we’re just two humans with a penchant for wearing too many hats” and not a giant corporation with a stacked team and endless resources. And our community loved it. It was a turning point, a pivot toward authenticity in a world saturated with polished veneers.
So, dear reader, take heed from our tale. Mistakes are as inevitable as daylight, but it’s all about how you shimmy through the storm. Our motto now? “It wouldn’t be a Threads of Fate production without a f*ck up.” But let me tell you, we now scrutinize everything like Sherlock Holmes ripped on caffeine before we give the green light for production.
Brit, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As a versatile professional, I have cultivated expertise across multiple domains, embracing the role of a modern-day multipotentialite. My innate proclivity toward creativity, artistry, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to personal and professional growth has driven me to explore various avenues of interest and industries. Think of me as a maestro of innovation and a seeker of personal and professional enlightenment.
Enter Threads of Fate, which I co-founded with my bestie, Blaire Porter, in 2018. Our mission? To help people tap into their inner magic and harnessing their potential through the use of non-gendered oracle and tarot decks. This journey commenced during our formative years i.e. being a bunch of wild ones in our twenties on the streets of Brooklyn back in 2012 when we began our “healing path.” During the following years we found existing divination tools lacking in alignment with our worldview and experiences. What initially began as a passion project rapidly evolved into a thriving business within a remarkably short period. Our commitment to exhaustive research, coupled with our personal experiences , reflections, artistic and creative talents, has enabled us to make a significant impact in this niche, becoming the largest indie deck creators in the industry. Allow me to acknowledge Nash Azarian, an invaluable third member of our Threads of Fate team, whose operational and customer service prowess has been indispensable to our success. He is *chefs kiss* (also you gotta check out his art, it’s amazing).
But wait, there’s more! Additionally, I am privileged to serve as a co-founder and creative lead for Blaire’s app, Sowilo, an app that’s all about rewiring your brain and changing your life. It’s science-backed, convenient, and downright revolutionary. Sowilo offers users a transformative experience, aiming to create enduring change, confidence, and competence. Our goal with Sowilo is to empower users to become the best version of themselves, so much so that they’ll eventually delete the app because they won’t need it anymore. We’re not in the business of creating dependency, we’re all about catalyzing lasting transformations for people, setting them up for success and then sending them on their way to conquer the world.
And you guessed it, there’s even more. I would be remiss if I did not mention Electric Lupine, an all-queer and womxn-led creative and advisory group I founded back at the beginning of the pandemic. EL is like your creative compass, offering services that range from creative strategy, brand design, personal and business development, marketing, and operations support. We’ve got the know-how, the experience and the determination to facilitate the growth and advancement of individuals and businesses, drawing upon our extensive knowledge and experience.
In summary, my career is a whirlwind of versatility, design, experimentation, innovation, an unwavering quest for potential and the realization of unique potentials. These endeavors have allowed me to develop a multifaceted skill set and a comprehensive understanding of various industries. I am forever dedicated to mysterious journey of exploration, growth, and empowerment for both myself and those I have the privilege of supporting.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Let’s embark on the exhilarating tale of Threads of Fate’s humble beginnings, a story that’s part audacity, part magic, and all heart.
Picture a couple of dreamers with empty pockets but hearts brimming with hope. We birthed the concept of Threads of Fate with nothing more than an “f”*ck around and find out” attitude. We decided to launch the concept on Kickstarter April 2018 with zero expectations. We were just thrilled to unveil something we’d been nurturing behind the scenes. We would gush to each other that we’d be excited even if just a handful of folks checked out our project and honestly, that, that right there is the secret sauce. When you create with intention and pour your heart and soul into it without an expectation around the outcome, you infuse it with a touch of magic that’s impossible to replicate. So, we let our passion and authenticity shine through.
Once the project took flight, the universe had a little surprise in store for us. In a mere 36 hours, we were fully funded, and then some. We ended up with more support and backing than we ever asked for or even dared to anticipate. It’s an approach I wholeheartedly endorse, and I genuinely hope more aspiring creators explore it. There’s a vast community out there yearning to witness dreams come to life.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Hands down self exploration, self-expression, potential impact and sharing the joy of creation.
