We were lucky to catch up with Brit Adgie recently and have shared our conversation below.
Brit, appreciate you joining us today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
I love being a business owner. There are so many aspects of my life I now have full control over but with that freedom comes stress of the unknown. I don’t think I was fully prepared for the level of stress starting a business can bring. From obsessing over your cash flow to training new employees, everything starts and stops with you. You have to be sales, marketing, office admin, trainer and (in my case) photographer and editor all in one. I would never trade this life for a traditional career but sometimes the security is appealing. I remind myself that I fully control my schedule and can take on whatever projects I want and the security aspect seems like a large price to pay for freedom and creativity.
In the last year we have grown to over 40 clients both nationally and regionally. With this growth we also had to grow our team. This has been a welcome challenge but requires as ton more hands on time in the beginning. When you only have a team of four, it is essential that the entire team is operating at our company’s standard and it take a lot of training to make sure something as subjective as art is consistent within the team. Overall, every new step I take with the business is stressful but extremely worth it. I encourage anyone who has an idea and (crucial) self discipline to give it a try. If you are not someone who is self motivated and works better with a specific task list, I would say starting a business is not for you.
Brit, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
When the pandemic hit I was doing rigging for a staging company (setting up audio for large scale productions and concert). That was immediately eliminated when the world shut down and I need to find a new way to make money.
I have always edited videos for fun but it wasn’t until 2020 that the possibility of making money from it became a reality. We started offering virtual tours and testimonials. I got my commerical drone pilot’s license and we quickly turned Adgie Images into a true media company that now offers commercials, marketing photos, custom videos and virtual tours. I love that my life took a turn and I think this is the best I have ever been at a craft. Our clients are amazing and I love our team and the products we create.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
We have always offered a consistent and extremely professional product. Most of our clients have come from referrals and I think that is a great lesson for new business owners. Your current client might not be your client forever but their word of mouth can make or break your business. Treat all clients with respect and give them the most professional product you are capable of – always.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Referrals referrals referrals! It is the most organic way to get a client and the easiest way to get a meeting with a potential new client.
