We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brigett Slaughter a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Brigett , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?

I started making coconut soy wax candles after learning that paraffin wax candles were creating health issues for my son, who suffers from allergies, asthma, and skin problems. Candles made with paraffin wax contain toxic substances that are released when burned. Naked Wick Candles are made with coconut soy wax that’s non-toxic and clean burning, which reduces indoor air pollution. The mission of Naked Wick Candles is to create eco-friendly candles that are safer to burn around people and pets.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

In 2019, I attended a candle making class to learn how to make clean burning candles. I wanted to make candles that wouldn’t trigger my son’s allergies and asthma. I then realized that most people are burning the wrong candles in their home. Paraffin wax candles release harmful toxins and chemicals into the air, that can negatively impact your health.
That’s when I decided to create a candle business devoted to making eco-friendly candles that are safer to burn, and made with high quality wax and fragrances.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?

As a new candle maker in 2019, I thought it would be easy to make candles. I was wrong in more ways than one. Making candles is more than just melting wax and adding fragrance oil. Making a great smelling candle is determined by many factors including, the wax type, wick type, cure time, container size, room temperature, and the amount of fragrance oil used, to name a few.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?

Social media, pop-up shops, and customer referrals have been my best source for new clients.
