Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brielle Jolie. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Brielle, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
When it comes to meaningful projects I just started my full business under the name paradigm 7. my whole message after graduating with a bachelors of fine arts in the recent months. Is to redefine what an art gallery should look like. My art circulates the idea of black love in Black beauty so I want my galleries to reflect that and I couldn’t find a space where I feel included enough to laugh loud and listen to the music I love and to have the loved ones around meets where they felt comfortable as well. so out of the idea was born paradigm7 A space where I create a different idea of an gallery from DJs and music to hang in my art an unconventional way it engages the senses and ideas of thought that is often left out of art which I think should be included more. as well as the fact that all of my events are for one time only as of now so I show my art for that one time and it’s only seen with those few people who decided to come it creates this idea that not everything is attainable and posted on social media and Innoway can lose its value.
Brielle, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
So I’m Brielle Jolie and if you may not know me I am an artist a creative a woman who loves to laugh as well as a woman who lives her life in love. Love is the biggest idea of my life that I choose to pursue. Most people when I say that think of a cliché of falling head over heels over people or going through life with a naïve mindset. but that’s nowhere near the truth iamb breaking down the boundaries of what love is at its purest form that love is not this high ride rainbow that is unattainable to people it’s something that is real and raw and makes us worth living in my opinion. which goes into who I am as an artist I just graduated Columbus college of art design as a fine arts major with a bachelors. And my whole idea was related around the black community and inclusively black women for my first collection and idea of how Love looks in different situation. I think it’s important to show where I came from and go deeper into showing joy and how that reflects in our culture and close instead of always showing the struggle which is often time at the forefront of what a black artist is showing. One of the main things I’m proud of is graduating as a fine artist as one of the few black students in the class and as well as never losing my voice for always speaking up whether is my professor or dean of students I stood my ground and fought for the fact that I do matter in my choices matter in my art matters. as well as my beautiful family and friends who have supported me through everything I believe that is One of the biggest reasons I choose to show galleries now because hearing their opinions of not feeling welcomed or being awkward and quiet spaces specially around a white audience I wanted to bring in that cookout filling that family function where we are connected in our is a part of our future.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I guess the goal would be again this idea of love. Being raised in the church truthfully there are many eyes in the church as well as all kinds of walks of life come in that church. But seeing the way we song and held hands and gave love to those we did not know sharing laughs I was so inspired. from watching my mom laugh and joke and my grandfather and just my family in general I was inspired by these acts of moments that were only for a minute that not many seem that I knew had to be deeper than that. in these moments there was something magical there was something pure about these acts of love that inspired who I am now as an artist. The fact that life gives you a lot of challenges but they are for a quick second there’s these moments of silence that I see the glistening and eyes the belly laughs and the deep cries there’s this moment connecting them all this idea of what Love can bring. so taking that and transforming into my arts for me I’m a mix media artist and I work a lot with oil paint film and video photography sculpture and I am engaging all of those senses I find in those moments and bring them to life to share.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creator I would say is being able to show that people matter. I’m able to re-create a moments of pain or of the most happiest time in someone’s life and re-create it and actually bring the emotions to life whether I’m using glitter or fabric beads I can transform a particular time of someone’s life. especially painting black women who often are not seen in the media for my first ever paradigm seven event I had this little girl run up to me and take a picture of my peas and she was wearing a sparkly gown and her joy on her face inquisitive look brought so much joy to my face. As well as being a poet just being able to share my work with my words and having people relate to that having a voice being able to be heard without them even being able to say anything to be spoken for and understood brings me all the joy in the world.
