We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brie Farris a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Brie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
To be successful, you must always stay one step ahead. One step ahead of not only competition, but one step ahead of yourself. My favorite quote, “if you want to move different, you have to move different.”

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
As a young adult, I never had a “calling” for anything in life. I very much went through my day-to-day life casually going wherever the wind would take me; I certainly didn’t think I’d ever own a small business. I always thought being successful meant being in a normal profession – teacher, doctor or anything of the like, but as I look back, many experiences have proven to me that this is exactly what I was meant to do, which is what makes it so much more fulfilling.
The best part about my business is that I can be who I want to be. I have a very much “love it or leave it” mentality. This is who I am and if you follow me, it will be a wild ride. I am not afraid to express myself and share real stories with my social media following. I believe that alone, is what sets me apart. I am very much for business, but I am very much for the behind-the-scenes part of it as well. One of the best parts about being in this industry for over a decade is helping up and coming photographers mold their business model. I absolutely love when photographers as me for advice and love seeing them become something so beautiful.
It’s no surprise that the photography industry is steadily growing; it’s an absolutely amazing field, however, many fail to understand that community over competition is how we all grow. There are enough people in this world that need their lives documented so there’s no reason why we cannot all get to the top together.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Not every client is made for you. Period.
I have always been one to “trust my gut”, but owning a business, sometimes I don’t always have that luxury. That said, I’ll never forget how uncomfortable it was to be photographing someone that I should have vetted first. Bottom line is, trust your instincts. Not every client is going to work for you, not every job is made for you. Always do your research and make calls that are in your best interest.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I want others like me to know that the path to success isn’t the same for everyone. It’s okay to take the road less traveled. It’s okay to work on building a business, even if it takes years and years. If it feels right, do it. At the end of the day, no one can make you happy more than YOU.
