We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brie Dieker. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brie below.
Brie, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
My mission since I began painting full-time in 2022 has always been to inspire an immersive connection to nature in a way that heals. I spent a year traveling with my boyfriend and dogs and was forced to do some serious self-reflection in the silence of forests and over time I found nature was the best medicine for healing. Every leaf, every rock, and every branch tells their own story of survival and I think we as humans can relate in that way. I also want to inspire environmental conservation. We have a responsibility as stewards of the Earth and I’m passionate about the “leave no trace” policy when hiking. I aim to encourage respect for the environment and see it through the eyes of childhood wonder. I love the mystery of traveling to a new place and not knowing what lies around the corner and I hope others find that curiosity and feel a sense of solace and wonder through my paintings.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve always been drawn like a magnet to art. Since I could hold a pencil that’s how I’ve communicated. I grew up watching a lot of Bob Ross and I think that set up my mentality toward landscape paintings. I started really getting into art in high school, but I never thought I could make it as an artist until I was offered to apply for a scholarship at a fantastic community college in my hometown. I knew I wanted to pursue painting when my professor said, “You’re a painter, girl!” When my boyfriend and I decided three years ago to sell our belongings and move into a camper I fell in love with the expressions and scenery of our country and picked up painting again after not creating much for about five years. After months of honing my skills again, I felt ready to start commissions with friends and family. I later settled in New Mexico and I fell further in love with my craft and nature. I felt free to explore new and old mediums, but I mainly work in acrylic paint these days. Sometimes clients don’t know exactly what kind of scenery to execute on canvas, and that’s where my experience traveling and documenting so many diverse areas has come in handy. I’m most proud of the impact it makes on others who see my work. I want potential clients to know I take great care in each brush stroke or line and do my absolute best to help make their visions come to life. My heart and soul go into every piece and I hope that is always conveyed in my work.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I’m a pretty shy and anxiety-ridden person so art is a way for me to open up and communicate so I feel rewarded in the sense that I found a way to channel my feelings and thoughts uniquely. Seeing the way my art has impacted people I don’t even know has been huge for me. I made a piece recently for someone who deals with heavy topics in her line of work and to know my work is healing strangers is more than I could have ever dreamed. I get to do sentimental pieces for loved ones who have passed on and open up a new world of possibilities for others. I’m also rewarded for the uplifting relationships I’ve built with fellow creators.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Definitely diversifying where I market myself has helped me grow. I learned this through watching my friend Tay market the heck out of herself online. I get to connect with fellow creators and potential clients all across the country this way. I think getting involved in the local community has been a major aspect too. I am so thankful for all the wonderful people I get to meet at the local gallery where I volunteer and guest show at. I think the biggest thing is putting that fear aside of judgment and knowing the right people will connect with your work online or in person.
