We recently connected with Bridgette Lee Martinez and have shared our conversation below.
Bridgette Lee, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents have always supported what I’ve wanted to do in life. I love to learn and try so many new trades and talents. My parents would always encourage my creativity and pursuit of new challenges early in life. They created a home where I could cook, try experiments, sing, dance, and put on performances. Even when I made the decision to pursue theater arts in college they supported it. To this day they have never missed a show.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
As someone who is constantly wanting to learn something new I don’t have one mission. I have 1000’s of little missions that make me feel complete and happy with life. Some of those missions are acting, thrifting, handiwork, and wallpaper installation. I’m proud of my life missions to learn and never do the same thing each day.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to learn how to be happy with my life choices and not depend on the thoughts of others. This is indeed difficult to do and I still struggle with this. For a long time I tried to live life like others around me or from the ideas from music and television. However, what I’ve found is living my life the way I enjoy it is much more rewarding.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Every morning I do not wake up thinking, “Oh, here’s everything I need to do today”. I wake up with an intense desire to create. Creating for me can be anything from editing a photo, to making a silly video, to organizing a list of ideas. I usually create something when I first wake up and then after I have fulfilled that desire I can move along with my day.
