We were lucky to catch up with Bridget Truxillo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Bridget, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I left law enforcement partially because I didn’t know how to balance the bad I saw and experienced with my desire to live life from a place of positivity, not negativity. When I left law enforcement, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life because I had put all my eggs in the professional basket of being in federal law enforcement someday. I decided law school could be an option with lots of possibilities. I knew that someday I wanted to find a way to work with law enforcement again as an attorney. Fast forward 14 years, and I was fed up with the law firm life; the world was drastically shifting its opinion of law enforcement after the George Floyd incident, so I decided it was time to find a way to help law enforcement officers take care of themselves, which can help with happiness, positivity and hopefully prevent terrible decisions that impact the constitutional rights of the community members that chose to protect. I believe that I have a unique combination of law enforcement and legal experience that can help all of law enforcement, particularly women in law enforcement, because of my experiences as the only female member of the SWAT team.
Bridget, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Law enforcement officers who are overwhelmed and frustrated can leverage Bridget’s 30 years of wellness, leadership, law enforcement, and legal training and experiences for a blueprint on how to feel more comfort, ease, and support for increased balance and joy in life. Bridget is passionate about helping law enforcement officers discover their ability to find happiness daily, regardless of the environment or circumstances surrounding them. Bridget is an attorney and former Deputy Sheriff (SWAT and undercover narcotics) and the founder and CEO of both Protective Wellness and the Truxillo Law Firm.
I was a Deputy Sheriff in Florida, and after spending time on patrol she transferred to the Narcotics and Organized Crime Unit (NOCU) and also joined the SWAT team. I know the challenges law enforcement officers and first responders face, both outside and inside their agencies, based on her experiences with her agency and with the public. Although I loved serving the public, I realized I wanted to serve the law enforcement and first responder community directly, so I left law enforcement for law school as a means to glean the knowledge and skills necessary for this purpose. I launched Protective Wellness which offers a peer-reviewed 7-step course to assist law enforcement officers in learning what wellness means and in creating a personalized wellness plan unique to their needs.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I have been on several podcasts to talk about wellness for law enforcement and talk about the course I offer through Protective Wellness. During those conversations I have talked about my experiences (and challenges) as a female SWAT operator, and have started getting calls and messages from women across the country who are facing harassment or discrimination. I have been able to provide advice, guidance and counsel to assist them in next steps, filing grievances and lawsuits and more.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I started studying the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People in my early 20s and continue to do so today. It influences every aspect of my personal and professional lives. I even used that as a guide to helping me create the content in Protective Wellness, and the integrity I live by as an attorney.
