We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bridget Rodriguez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bridget below.
Bridget, appreciate you joining us today. Can you share an important lesson you learned in a prior job that’s helped you in your career afterwards?
I’ve all all kinds of jobs, not all creative or related to photography. In one way or another, they all ended up helping me become a better business owner and photographer.
For example, when I did sales- I felt so far from what I wanted to do creatively. Although I was very good at it. In hindsight, you’re basically selling yourself every time you get a new client. Sales teaches the importance of attitude, presentation and delivery of the final product. I also learned the importance of first impressions.
Before ever calling myself a director, I experienced every position on set. From holding lights, to making mood boards to editing the project. It’s not until you work every position do you see how they all work together. I believe that allows you to be the best you can be, while humbling you. But I will still hold that light!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Growing up I was always fascinated by photos, enchanted by the nostalgia photography created. I fell in love with it in my high school dark room. Reflecting on how I got to where I am today, it was my sole mission to enjoy what I do.
I’m a photographer and director born in Miami. I shoot medium format and 35mm film, enjoying the slow and gratifying process of developing the negatives myself. My focus in fashion has taken me to work in Los Angeles, New York and Paris. Contrasting to that, I capture simplicity. Pausing time- knowing one day it will look different. Thats the thing I love most about photography.
I get inspiration from my child-like wonder that sees pops of color in a concrete city. Also- vintage Vogue. I have an exciting project in the works that will be physically printed and bound into books. I’ve shifted my energy to building relationships with more earth conscious clients. My passion for creating a better world goes beyond which jobs I take on but how I live my day to day. Creating with intention.
Fun fact: I have a carefully curated (mostly thrifted) closet that I’ve officially opened up to styling clients and shoots.
While in Los Angeles I started working in film along side my best friend. Mainly editing and directing videos. We’re working on an special documentary based in Hawaii- more to share soon!
I’m proud to say that without the nicest tools, I’m building a career I’m proud of.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
A trick is to always introduce yourself as what you do, or what you want to do. If your dream is to be a writer, claim that immediately. Say, “I’m a writer” when new people ask what you do. It’s an opportunity to introduce what you want next, even if it isn’t your current day to day. It will cause a ripple effect in the universe and people will remember you as that.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For photography, developing and darkroom printing a photo I took. Creating something tangible. As well as bringing someone out of their shell and capturing a photo they will cherish forever.
