Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Bridget Pettyjohn. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Bridget, thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Ive been doing hair for over 30 years.I started off braiding hair and later in the late 90’s got into hair extensions and updos and fell in love with the different looks. Fast forward to now I worked full time at my local hospital working with cancer patients while still doing hair part time. I worked with Novant 21 years but worked with the cancer patients for 12 years. I offered my service to most after they finished chemo. But I wanted to do more than that so I took class that would allow me accept insurance because not every patient could afford my service so if this could help it would be great. Working face to face with these patients and seeing them from the beginning of diagnosis, to starting treatment , during treatment and to see how these treatments can not only damage a patients hair but their self esteem and to hear their story makes me sad, so if I can help them restore their confidence by making Medical Grade and Cosmetic Units that gives me joy to do that. I donated to my local Cancer Institute as well as the facility I worked at. If I could help more I would. I stepped out on faith 8/1/24 to do this full time so that I can focus more on my business. Is it easy NO but I made a promise to my late mother who I name my business after of Julias Hair Collection I made a promise to not give up, to help more people and this brand will be world wide. My business will not just only reach and help cancer patients but I want to help out people in the VA that suffer from hair loss due to different types of burns or alopecia. So many people suffer from hair loss not just medical but with age and that where people can purchase cosmetic units. As I said I stepped out on faith to do it full time and funding for inventory has been my biggest challenge but again not giving up this is not just a job for me its a passion I love hair, I love doing hair I love to see smiles on people faces when they see how they look. I have so many clients tell me I’m their counselor, we’ve cried and we’ve laughed. My clients are like family just like my patients was.
I pray and keep my faith so high that I see so many good things in my future for my business.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a 21 year hairstylist. I make Medical Grade and Cosmetic Units for both male and female for people who suffer from hair loss due to chemo, radiation or alopecia. Each unit is custom to fit each specific client. I also sell hair products such as flat irons, automatic curling iron, edge control, wax sticks, lace glue. Currently Im working on hair growth oils , shampoos and conditioners.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Good customer service. A first impression to anyone is so important. So being in the hair industry I’m always meeting new clients and I always was to present great customer service whether it’s the location, the space, the room. with any new client 1st consultations are alone at the shops so they can feel comfortable to talk and relax. I’m very honest if I feel something about a style might not fit I’m honest and we going to work on one that fits. With me selling hair and wigs make sure I have the best quality and prices around.
so once that new client gets her first experience with me I always do a follow up call a week later and with that they are please. my google reviews now is 5 stars.
so my clientele base is off word of mouth just people spreading good word about me, my work and my good spirits. so that’s how I build a my good reputation within my market. Good customer service
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
This is a weird question kinda , but my full time job had funded my business helped started it and it helped motivated me to go full time into it.
