Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Bridget Haught. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Bridget, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How do you think about cost-management? Growing a business is always exciting, but often businesses run into issues when costs grow faster than revenue – have you experienced such an episode? Any advice for other operators around how to keep costs in line?
Everyone says if your business can make it five years you have built something solid. We’re right at the peek of year three and our costs are ever rising. A lot of the businesses that survive are racking up debt. The truth is often times bigger is not better. Growth is part of the equation but the other half is maintaining costs. One of the ways that awesome blossom manages that is to set aside profit first. We set aside our small plate first so our overall habit is “sales – profit = expenses” and then we keep a super close eye on everything that goes in and out of the business!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am so happy to introduce myself to all of you. My name is Bridget Grace Haught and I fell in love with floral design in 2010. I got a lucky internship at a local flower shop. I knew that someday I wanted a cute shop of my own, but I had a long way to go.
I attended art school in California and Oregon and graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno at the end of 2015 with degrees in entrepreneurship, business, and fine art. I worked in shops throughout the Pacific Northwest and I eventually grew into management roles. I pushed myself to develop my design skill set beyond what I thought possible.
I balance my professional pursuits with painting, and thriving in the wild. I have always been inspired by the stunning rustic nature that surrounds the Truckee Meadows and you will see those elements reflected in my floral designs.
All that, and so much more, has finally prepared me for this next chapter. I promise to make this world a better place by helping people express love through the art of floral design. We need love now more than ever. I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Building a reputation with in our market is all about creating connections. I work in weddings so it’s very rare that a wedding happens without a lot of gears. We have marketing efforts in our local area to help connect different vendors. I’m very inspired by other business owners as well. Groups like BNI and Weddings of the West have helped us create life long friendships and outstanding business connections.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Connecting with clients is an imperative part of our success. Most of our marketing efforts revolve in online sales. We utilize social media but our most effective strategies are paid advertising opportunities through services that connect us directly to our ideal client like Wedding Wire and The Knot.
