We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brianne Moore. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brianne below.
Brianne, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
I believe the biggest challenge to profitability in the art industry is exposure. There are a lot of amazing artists who don’t get the exposure their business needs to thrive because of lack of representation in the committees. When artists seek opportunities, for example, in juried exhibitions or gallery representation, there is a committee who decides who will be accepted and who won’t. These exhibitions bring your work before collectors who are looking for new artists to support. From my experience and those of fellow artists, marginalized groups get denied or no response at all. Although there are changes being made to make inclusivity possible, we still have a ways to go to reach our full potential as an industry. There are art markets and fairs popping up everywhere so there are still opportunities for exposure and to build revenue..You just need to do some digging to find them and stay persistent with applying.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Brianne Moore and I’m a self taught visual artist in Dallas, Tx. I started painting out of necessity. I needed an emotional outlet and I’ve always loved to create. I always loved drawing as a child and that never stopped. In 2016 I started painting with the intent to celebrate the women of my culture, to remember, commune with and celebrate women who identify as part of the BIPOC community. We haven’t always been celebrated, let alone celebrate ourselves at the magnitude that we’re witnessing today. I’m proud, honored and excited to continue capturing that on canvas. I create vibrant and relatable canvas art for women on their self discover journey and those who have settled in already. Representation matters and I want to represent all of us. Women come in all shapes, sizes and styles. I want to represent all of us in my work. Women of color will feel seen in my art.
I work in multiple styles. I believe that’s what sets me apart in this industry. As artists were often told to stick to one style to get recognized, but were multi faceted. Why dim that light? I give customers, collectors, clients, the opportunity to choose from the different styles I create in or they can simply give me creative freedom to customize a piece for them. When commissioning artwork I allow them choose to because we’re not one size fits all. I want to give options
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Honestly I believe in showing up as my true authentic self. Every time I participate in an event, I meet someone who’s like “Hey! I follow you on social media!” I always think it’s so cool because I get to meet someone who I’ve been communicating with over social media posts and they get to actually see that yeah I’m still me in person! Lol that’s what helped build my reputation in my market. Being genuine and consistently producing artwork that my viewers can relate to.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
A lot of my viewers know my backstory but for those that are new to my business, I’ll share the biggest shift in my life that represents resilience. In 2020, when the pandemic really hit hard, my mom was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a bone marrow cancer. It really turned our life upside down. Because of Covid and me still needing to be around clients at work, she had to stay quarantined to her side of the house. It actually drove me deeper into creating because I just didn’t know what else to do. If I wasn’t going to do my one client a day at work or taking my mom to treatments I painted. I really drew inward and I stayed there for a while. It caused me to really reflect on life. I’m an only child and my best friend was so sick. I created some of the most beautifully vibrant artworks I’d ever done during that time. Instead of staying in that dark place I drew on all of these bright colors to dig me out of what felt like a sink hole. My mom is in remission, by the way, I couldn’t be more relieved. She’s always been my person.
So doing what I loved while not being able to be with her a lot, actually created two of my most loved art styles.
