We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brianne Atkinson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brianne below.
Hi Brianne, thanks for joining us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
A great risk that one can take is to move out of your comfort zone.. At one point in time in my career, I had outgrown my environment. I took a risk by moving from my hometown to a totally new environment in a different state. My hometown whom I loved dearly, had become too comfortable and stagnant and I needed to scale my business in a more creative way. And, as a domestic abuse survivor, I needed to breathe new air. The move was exciting and scary all at the same time and I knew that building a clientele was most important in order for me to be able to build a business from scratch. Social media played an intricate part in that strategy. I was able to build a following in the new place before the move even occurred. I knew that I wanted to specialize in color so all of my post focused on that area of expertise, and at that time you could post up to 100 times a day and that’s exactly what I did believe it or not. (Mind you it was 2014)..
Moving alone with two children and no family or friends was one of the hardest things that I have ever experienced, and at the same time one of the most rewarding things that I’ve ever experienced. It taught me a valuable lesson about the importance of building relationships and how much people need people. It also strengthen my faith and belief in God.
This move put an edge in my creativeness and allowed me to birth a thriving hair care line which has been shipped throughout the United States. Along my journey I had the pleasure to mentor several young people in the beauty business which gave birth to a published book which acts as a guide for cosmetology graduates struggling in the professional world in which gave birth to a Mentorship, where one on one training takes place.
If I would have allowed the fear of starting over to overtake my purpose, I wouldn’t have learned these valuable lessons about meeting the people that are supposed guide you to the your next level.
Brianne, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My grandmother was a Cosmetologist for many years, who owned a salon in the back of her House. I sat many years watching her as she worked . She was my first mentor before I even knew that cosmetology would be my career choice. I’ve now been in the beauty business for over 25 years as a licensed professional specializing. I have a love for color!
The salon is very adamant about the customers time and staying on schedule, by not over booking. My greatest passion now is mentorship and Sharing the things that I’ve learned from trial and error to the next generation beauty professionals. Giving one on one training sessions to new graduates and also seasoned vets.
I’ve been blessed to be able to create a hair care line called A PIECE OF MINT which was created to reactivate, immobilize, follicles, and to rejuvenate the scalp. The salon also provides one on one training for individuals that may be struggling in certain areas of their business.
The business entrepreneurship course is the top program right now!
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clientele for me has been keeping great relationships and word of mouth. It’s not always what you know, but who you know!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Having a child diagnosed with sickle cell anemia. Although he was blessed not to get sick very often. Learning how to pivot around hospital stays and running a successful business not only taught me but taught our family how to pivot.
