We were lucky to catch up with Brianna Zeno-Schlangen recently and have shared our conversation below.
Brianna, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I started becoming interested in doing makeup for fun when I was younger. It wasn’t until I was in my late teens when I really started to enjoy the different techniques and types of makeup that was out there. When I started feeling like I was actually good at it I started to enjoy it even more! I would read tutorials in magazines and watch videos to learn different things that I would try out on myself. Basically anything I could do to get more knowledge about makeup, I did. It made sense because I’ve always been artistic and enjoyed painting since I was a kid, it just shifted to a different medium the older I got. After realizing this was something I could do for a career, I decided to go to Aveda institute to become an esthetician. I couldn’t be more happy I did!
Brianna, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My brand Blush by Brianna, was created by myself after I graduated at Aveda institute for esthetics in 2018. I’ve always loved art and the older I got my love shifted from acrylic paints to makeup as my medium of choice. After I graduated from Aveda I went on to get my degree in business management because I wanted to know how to successfully own and run my small business. Now I offer services to people here in knoxville and so many surrounding areas, I love to travel so that’s a part I love to accommodate for my clients. My main services include any type of makeup you can imagine! My top few however that I do on a daily basis are makeup for brides and bridal parties, special events, and photoshoots . I also do Halloween or special effect style makeup, face painting for kids or birthday parties, or anything else you can think of. I truly enjoy it all, like I said makeup to me is an art! I pride myself on being the most personable, understanding, and empathetic person I can be when I’m with a client. You never know what they’re dealing with in life, why they’re doing a specific photo shoot, or how long they waited to walk down the isle. It’s intimate because you learn those special and meaningful details as an artiat. Getting to know my clients is so important to me. I want my clients to feel comfortable and open to talk and express what they’re wanting directly to me and I always make sure they feel as beautiful on the outside as I know they are on the inside before I leave. Sometimes something so simple like adding mascara and lipstick to someone who has never had that on before can change the way they view themselves. It truly is a beautiful thing to experience and that’s why I absolutely love what I do.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect for me is learning my clients stories and watching their faces light up when they see the finished makeup application. It’s a feeling I can never get used to because each person is so unique and I can tell it means so much to them in different ways.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I would say that my goal is to make people feel beautiful in their own skin. Yes, I apply makeup, but I also help them figure out what works for them individually. Based on their skin type, skin tone, and even with their day to day lifestyle. I can help them select products or techniques that can be beneficial to them, whether a dedicated makeup lover or a beginner with 2 kids. I love helping people find products they love that work for them.
