We recently connected with Brianna Whiting and have shared our conversation below.
Brianna, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Growing up I have always enjoyed styling hair. As a child I would ask all of my friends to let me do their hair. I eventually perfected my craft and decided to go to cosmetology school. In 2015 I made my first u-part wig then soon after I learned to make lace closure and lace frontal wigs. During my high school years my aunt Sherrie was diagnosed with cancer, while going through Chemo she begun to lose her hair. I could remember her asking me to style her hair but I never new what I could do to hide the hair loss. After making my first wig I promised myself that I would create my own wig line and donate complimentary wigs to women battling cancer and cancer survivors. My goal is to make every woman not only feel good but look good, despite any obstacles we may endure.
Brianna, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I established Makings of Bre Hair in 2021, though I had been a cosmetologist many years prior. Launching Makings of Bre Hair in the midst of a pandemic was never my plan but I felt it was done at the right time, I was finally ready to share my craft and my creativity with the world. I feel like the wigs I create are unique in the sense that I machine sew each wig myself and no wig is ever duplicated (unless requested). From the type of hair, the type of thread and even the ventilated caps I use to create my wigs, I took into special consideration every client. My thought process is always, what will be comfortable, convenient and most importantly the best fit/look for everyone. When a M.O.B.H (makings of Bre Hair) unit is purchased I want everyone to feel like, “yes, this was made uniquely for me”. My motto is transforming, longevity, strength and beauty!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One of the biggest lessons I had to unlearn was self doubt and thinking the market is over saturated. I believe it may have taken longer to launch my business due to my own self doubt, wondering if my products would be good enough, what if it fails, everyone else is doing it, etc. The beginning of 2022 I was a vendor at an event, at which I displayed a couple of my wig units and the feedback I received was absolutely amazing. In that moment, my mind was instantly changed and I knew that my business and my craft was more than unique and good enough.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Funding my business or any business is never easy. Thankfully I was able to save and use my personal money to fund my business. The process was definitely a lot slower, however I wanted to go into business debt free.
